    Abstract: A system includes a turbine and a spline gear coupled to the turbine. The spline gear includes first and second gear portions. The first gear portion includes a first surface configured to engage a second surface of the second gear portion. The first surface includes a first roughened surface having a plurality of first treatment zones distributed in two dimensions. A post-treatment coefficient of friction (COF) between the first and second surfaces is less than a threshold COF value.
