  • Patent number: 9041239
Abstract: A wind turbine having blades that rotate in a horizontal plane about a vertical axis. A single output shaft is directly connected by one-way bearings to the driven shaft of a permanent magnet generator. This eliminates the need for a gearbox and also eliminates the need for inverters. Friction losses are further reduced by suspending the vertical shaft with magnetic bearings. Airfoils are positioned in a specific vertical design so that they cup the wind on a lower concave portion of the airfoil for self-starting capability. Stealth radar-absorbing mesh and faceted mounting structures reduce scrambling of radar returns.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 13, 2013
Date of Patent: May 26, 2015
Inventors: Martin Epstein, Jon Eric Harms, William Stinson, Claudio Esposito

  • Patent number: 8664824
Abstract: A Halbach array is radially disposed in an environment optimized for efficiency and controlled for efficient generation and use of power in order to generate, establish, and maintain a desired level of rotational energy with enhanced efficiency and in order to make the most efficient use of electromotive forces and magnetic fields which are either intentionally created for the operation of the apparatus or which result from the operation of the apparatus.
