Abstract: A traverse carriage and operator arrangement for transversely adjusting the abrader unit or units of a mobile surface abrading apparatus to facilitate more precise abrading of the underlying road or other surface. In a preferred embodiment the traverse carriage is mounted on a cross-member by means of rollers and is operated by a specially designed, fluid-operated cylinder horizontally oriented in the mobile surface abrading apparatus and attached to the traverse carriage and the apparatus frame for moving the traverse carriage along the cross-member and positioning the abrader unit a selected distance along the cross-member transverse to the longitudinal movement of the mobile surface abrading apparatus.

  • Patent number: 6393908
Abstract: A self-contained symmetrical outflow meter for resting on a non-skid surface such as pavement and timing the rate of water drainage from the surface. The outflow meter is characterized by a circular base, a pair of handle supports which extend upwardly from the base and a handle which spans the top end portions of the handle supports. A funnel is mounted between the handle supports beneath the handle and a vertical water discharge tube for containing water is mounted in the base, beneath the funnel. A spring-loaded plunger is mounted in the discharge tube for selectively sealing a water discharge opening provided in the base. Upper and lower adaptors are suspended from the funnel inside the water discharge tube, and upper and lower switch floats are vertically displaceably mounted on the respective upper and lower adaptors. A timer is provided on a timer support which spans the upper ends of the handle supports, and is wired to the switch floats.

  • Patent number: 5780720
Abstract: A self-contained outflow meter for resting on pavement and measuring the rate of water drainage from the pavement. The outflow meter includes a vertical tube for containing water and having a bottom water discharge end sealed by a rubber sealing ring. A spring-loaded plunger is suspended from a cap mounted on the upper end of the tube for selectively sealing a water discharge opening provided in the base. Upper and lower float switches are suspended from the cap into the tube and include upper and lower switch floats, respectively, which are vertically displaceably mounted. A timer is provided on the cap and is wired to the float switches. The base is placed on the pavement surface with the plunger sealing the water discharge opening and water is poured into the tube. As the water level exceeds the respective levels of the switch floats, the floats are displaced upwardly.

  • Patent number: 5779524
Abstract: An adjustable cage assembly for selectively varying the path of abrasive in an abrasive blast swath produced by a mobile surface abrading apparatus. The adjustable cage assembly operates in cooperation with a rotable wheel having multiple, radially-extending blades positioned in a wheel housing. A cage having a cage window extends into the center of the wheel and an impeller having multiple impeller slots is positioned in the cage for rotation with the wheel, and receives a supply of abrasive particles such as steel shot, from the apparatus. As the impeller and wheel are rotated and the abrasive is continually fed into the impeller, the abrasive is discharged through the rotatably aligned impeller slots and the selectively-positioned cage window, and is propelled by the rotating wheel blades through the abrasive discharge opening to abrade, clean or etch the pavement.

  • Patent number: 5257479
Abstract: A pressure-enhanced air sweep system for a mobile surface abrading apparatus designed for cleaning and texturing the surface of horizontal, or near horizontal, structures, particularly roads, highways, airport runways and the like. Abrasive particles such as steel shot or grit are projected at the structure surface in angular relationship to abrade and etch the surface and the abrasive is swept by a pressurized current of air into one or more vertical abrasive conveyors, where it is transferred by air to a rotating screen, separated from the air, road debris and dust in the screen, recycled and repeatedly projected onto the surface to be treated. Air velocity through a sweeper channel upwardly through the vertical abrasive conveyor(s) is carefully controlled to lift the abrasive particles, as well as the dust and debris, beyond the rebound energy boundary and effect efficient recycling of the particles.

  • Patent number: 5161337
Abstract: A mobile surface abrading apparatus for cleaning and texturing the surface of horizontal, or near horizontal, structures, particularly roads, highways, airport runways and the like. Abrasive particles such as steel shot or grit are projected at the structure surface in angular relationship to abrade and etch the surface and the abrasive rebounds into one or more vertical abrasive conveyors, where it is transferred by air to a rotating screen, separated from the air, road debris and dust and recycled and repeatedly projected onto the surface to be treated. Air flow upwardly through the vertical abrasive conveyors is carefully controlled to lift the abrasive particles, as well as the dust and debris, beyond the rebound energy boundary and effect efficient recycling of the particles.

  • Patent number: 4433511
Abstract: A mobile apparatus for treating surfaces by abrasive blasting consists of a mobile housing having self-propelled endless tracks or treads for moving over the surface to be treated. The housing has a reservoir for abrasive particles and a rotary wheel with blades operable on rotation to throw the abrasive particles against the surface to be treated to abrade or etch the surface. The rotary wheel is operable to throw the abrasive particles at a high velocity at an angle to the surface. A return passage for the particles has an opening at the angle of rebound of the particles extending toward the reservoir. A plurality of trays receives the recirculating particles, fill with particulate material and then spill into the reservoir. Particulate material on the trays absorbs kinetic energy from the particles to prevent further rebounding.
