Patent number: 6585021Abstract: A CD label applicator kit including a case, a support device and an applicator tool. The case includes a base and cover that provides a label plate. The label forms an opening. The support device includes an alignment post, a hub and a spring. The alignment post is affixed to an outer wall of the cover and extends outwardly through the opening. The hub is slidably disposed about the alignment post and defines a disk-receiving surface. The spring biases the hub to a raised position in which the disk-receiving surface is above the label plate. Finally, the applicator tool forms a central passage sized for selective placement about the alignment post. In one preferred embodiment, the kit includes a label sheet pack and a software disk stored within the base, and a writing utensil secured to the cover.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2001Date of Patent: July 1, 2003Assignee: Imation Corp.Inventors: Jon R. Clark, George L. Foster, Richard E. Jewett, Leo W. Spychalla, John W. Swanson

Patent number: 6111726Abstract: The present invention provides a removable data storage cartridge in which the data storage media is first enclosed within a shutter assembly having a shutter window exposing less than half of the media. The shutter assembly is enclosed within a cartridge housing that includes a cartridge window. Rotation of the shutter assembly within the cartridge housing moves the removable data storage cartridge between an open position in which the shutter window is located within the cartridge window, thereby exposing the media, and a closed position in which the shutter window is located within the cartridge housing.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1998Date of Patent: August 29, 2000Assignee: Imation Corp.Inventors: Jon R. Clark, John W. Swanson

Patent number: 6078482Abstract: A removable data storage cartridge having a releasable shutter assembly. The shutter assembly rotatably maintains a data storage media and includes a first half and a second half. In this regard, at least a portion of an outer periphery of the first half is configured to releasably engage at least a portion of an outer periphery of the second half. With this configuration, the first half can easily be disassembled from the second half for replacing the media if found to be defective. In one preferred embodiment, the shutter assembly further includes a hinge integrally formed with the first half and the second half for facilitating axial assembly of the first half to the second half.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1998Date of Patent: June 20, 2000Assignee: Imation Corp.Inventors: Jon R. Patent number: 5812351Abstract: A cartridge for a floppy diskette has a cover shell and a back shell. Fabric liners are provided on the interior of the cartridge so that the floppy diskette is cleaned when it rotates. A lifter is provided on the back shell underneath the fabric liner. A raised region is formed on the inner surface of the cover shell under the fabric liner and opposite the lifter on the back shell. The raised region rises from the plane of the cartridge shell beginning at the periphery and rising until a central raised area is reached. The angle of inclination, .alpha., is less than 20.degree.. This minimizes the likelihood that the raised region will cause an imprint on the floppy diskette, thereby damaging it, if the cover and back shells of the cartridge are squeezed together.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1995Date of Patent: September 22, 1998Assignee: Imation Corp.Inventors: James J. Wulfing, Jon R. Clark

Patent number: 5631792Abstract: A cartridge for a disc-shaped recording medium, the cartridge including a cover shell and a base shell which house a flexible, magnetic recording medium therebetween. A movable shutter is provided along a front edge of the cartridge for covering, when in the closed position, an opening in each shell which allows a read/write head to access the recording medium. The shutter is windowless and has triangle-shaped portions which cover the read/write head access openings. The shutter includes a raised rib along its periphery and has a rounded corner. A raised rib may also be provided on the cartridge shell adjacent the read/write head access opening to prevent debris particles from entering the interior of the cartridge via the head access opening. The shutter is reinforced to prevent bending and has a rounded corner to minimize the chance that the shutter corner will become snagged on some other object, such as loose clothing.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1995Date of Patent: May 20, 1997Assignee: Imation Corp.Inventors: Bruce W. Carlson, Jon R. Clark, William M. Dunbar

Patent number: 5083231Abstract: A disk cartridge including a rotatable disk, a cartridge case for housing the disk having upper and lower shells, and a cleaning wiper disposed between each surface of the disk and the respective upper and lower shells is disclosed. A lifter is mounted on the lower shell for biasing the wipers into contact with the disk. Ribs are mounted on the upper shell opposite the lifter. The ribs are substantially parallel to the disk radius and substantially perpendicular to the direction of rotation of the disk and extend for substantially the entire radius of the disk. The ribs maintain a minimum level of wiping pressure on the disk along the entire radius of the disk. 3:1.9.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1990Date of Patent: January 21, 1992Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Kevin C. Veenstra, Jon R. Clark

Patent number: 5027949Abstract: A lock assembly for a shipping case includes a rotatable knob received within an aperture of a lid. A latch bar rotatable with the knob is engageable with a ramped ledge in a protruding hub of the base. Rotating the knob secures the shipping case lid to the base. The knob includes a lock operator pivotally attached within a channel formed in a bowl of the knob. A lock beam of the lock operator, upon rotation of the knob, is engageable with any one of a plurality of detents formed in the lid that define the open, closed and locked states of the shipping case. A resilient spring plank formed integrally with the lock operator engages a recess formed in the knob and acts to bias the lock beam into engagement with the detents. A fastener assembly mounts the latch bar to the knob.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1989Date of Patent: July 2, 1991Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: F.
