  • Patent number: 10385800
Abstract: A cylinder head assembly includes a cylinder head having an igniter mount that forms a portion of a fireside surface of the cylinder head. The assembly further includes a sleeve abutting the igniter mount within an igniter bore in the cylinder head, such that the sleeve and the cylinder head together form an igniter cooling passage circumferential of the igniter mount, and extending axially between the sleeve and the cylinder head. The configuration of the igniter mount and sleeve improves heat dissipation and reduces likelihood of pre-ignition in an internal combustion engine.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 2, 2017
Date of Patent: August 20, 2019
    Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.

  • Patent number: 8800517
Abstract: An engine includes a camshaft supported in a housing for rotation about an axis of rotation. A cam gear is attached to one end of the camshaft and includes a first thrust bearing surface. A thrust ring is attached to the cam gear and includes a second thrust bearing surface. A thrust ring retainer is attached to the housing with a plurality of bolts and includes a pair of thrust surfaces trapped between the first thrust bearing surface of the cam gear and a second thrust bearing surface of the thrust ring. The thrust ring retainer also defines a portion of a lubrication connection passage that facilitates pressure equalization among a plurality of lubrication galleries arranged in parallel adjacent the camshaft.

  • Publication number: 20070056571
Abstract: An internal breather for removing oil from blow-by in an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The breather includes a breather cover having a breather cover drainback hole. The breather further includes a breather cover seal in sealed engagement with the breather cover, and the breather cover seal includes a breather cover seal drainback hole that is aligned with the breather cover drainback hole to create a drainback passage. A breather chamber is bounded on at least one end by the breather cover and the breather seal. A breather media is positioned within the breather chamber, the breather media for removing an amount of oil from the blow-by. The amount of oil removed from the blow-by can, during operation of the engine, be drawn through the drainback passage so as to exit the breather chamber, at least partially due to gravity, and at least partially using a gearing mechanism that is in operative association with a camshaft of the engine.

  • Publication number: 20050172928
Abstract: A powered apparatus constitutes a utilitarian device removably mounted on an internal combustion engine. That engine has a housing, a vertical crankshaft, and an engine coupling connected to the upper end of the crankshaft. The utilitarian device includes a body and a drive connector that is removably coupled to the crankshaft to receive rotational force from the internal combustion engine. The weight of the utilitarian device is carried by a support bearing which is fixedly connected to either the body or the engine coupling and releasably engages the other of the body and the engine coupling.
