Patent number: 11140056Abstract: Described is a server monitoring technology that is scalable to large numbers of servers, e.g., in a datacenter. Agents on servers run queries to monitor data sources for that server, such as performance counters and other events. The agents monitor their resource usage and those of monitored events to stay within an administrator-specified resource budget (policy), e.g., by modifying the running queries and/or monitoring parameters. A controller receives results of the monitoring, analyzes the results, and takes action as needed with respect to server operation and monitoring. The controller may dynamically update an agent's queries, monitoring parameters and/or monitored data post-processing operations. The controller may issue alerts and reports, including alerts indicative of inter-server problems between two or more servers.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2019Date of Patent: October 5, 2021Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: David A. Patent number: 10552397Abstract: The formulation of a merged sorted list from multiple input sorted lists in multiple phases using an array pair. Initially, the first array is contiguously populated with the input sorted lists. In the first phase, the first and second input sorted lists are merged into a first intermediary merged list within the second array. Each subsequent phase merges a prior intermediary merged list resulting from the prior phase and, a next input sorted list in the first array to generate a next intermediary merged list, or a merged sorted list if there or no further input in the first array. The intermediary merged lists alternate between the first array and the second array from one phase to the next phase.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2016Date of Patent: February 4, 2020Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Jonathan David Goldstein, Badrish Chandramouli

Patent number: 8683074Abstract: Aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to stream operators. In aspects, a stream event is received. Based on a timestamp associated with the stream event and the number of stream operators that have asked to be activated prior to or at the timestamp, zero or more stream objects are informed of one or more time events and torn down if no longer needed. In addition, a destination stream operator is instantiated, if needed, data (e.g., the timestamp and packet, if any) corresponding to the stream event is provided to a stream operator, output data, if any, is received from the stream operator, and the stream operator is torn down if it no longer needs state data between invocations.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2011Date of Patent: March 25, 2014Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Colin Joseph Meek, Mohamed Hassan Ali, Galex Sunyul Yen, Ciprian Gerea, Balan Sethu Raman, Jonathan David Goldstein, Badrish Chandramouli, Tomer Verona, Torsten Walther Grabs

Patent number: 8478743Abstract: Described herein are technologies pertaining to migrating state information of operators in a first continuous query plan to a second continuous query plan in an asynchronous manner, such that the first continuous query plan need not cease executing during the migrating of the state information. State information pertaining to stateful operators, such as join operators, is migrated from the first continuous query plan to the second continuous query plan by way of a transformation plan. State matching is utilized to generate the transformation plan.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2010Date of Patent: July 2, 2013Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Badrish Chandramouli, Jonathan David Goldstein, Peter Alfred Zabback, David Eugene Maier, Di Wang

Patent number: 7739262Abstract: Currency and consistency requirements are specified as part of a query against a database that may contain replicated data that is updated asynchronously and therefore may not be completely up to date. The database system constructs query execution plans that include an input selection operator that verifies the currency of a replica and selects a subplan using the replica for execution only when the replica meets the query's currency constraints. It checks possible query execution plans at construction time against the query's consistency constraints and any plans that may produce a result not meeting the consistency constraints are rejected. In this way, the query result is guaranteed to satisfy the query's currency and consistency requirements.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 2004Date of Patent: June 15, 2010Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Per-Åke Larson, Jonathan David Goldstein, Raghu Ramakrishnan, Hongfei Guo

Publication number: 20090319501Abstract: A query translation system and method for processing a streaming language query on existing or stored data. The streaming language query is applied against a data stream log by first translating the streaming language query into a database management system query (such as a SQL query) and then applying the translated streaming language query against the data stream log. Embodiments of the query translation system and method include a bitemporal converter that converts a bitemporal data stream log into a canonical history table format. Once in this format, embodiments of the query translation system and method translate a streaming language query into a SQL query. A categorization of each of the streaming operators that make up the streaming language query is performed to determine which translation technique to use. In general, one of three general translation techniques is used based on these categorizations of the streaming operators.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 24, 2008Publication date: December 24, 2009Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Jonathan David Goldstein, Mingsheng Hong
