  • Patent number: 11641140
Abstract: The present invention relates to an electromechanical battery comprising a single pole-pair Halbach array of permanent magnets incorporated into an annular flywheel, which together comprise a rotor assembly, a means for levitating the rotor assembly using a “double-lift” attractive magnetic levitator under active control, and a means for actively stabilizing the spinning rotor assembly by interaction with the fringe fields of the Halbach array.

  • Publication number: 20160056759
Abstract: A photovoltaic (PV) panel includes a PV output, a storage and retrieval subsystem (storage subsystem), and PV cells. The PV output is configured to be coupled to a distribution system to supply electricity produced by the PV panel to the distribution system. The storage subsystem includes a dedicated storage device. The storage subsystem is electrically coupled to the PV output and provides per-panel energy storage. The PV cells are coupled to the PV output and to the storage device. The PV cells are configured to photovoltaically generate an electrical potential when exposed to incident illumination. While incident illumination is available, the PV cells supply a portion of the electrical potential to the PV output and a second portion to the dedicated energy storage device. The storage subsystem is configured to intermediately supply energy stored thereon to the PV output while the incident illumination is unavailable or partially unavailable.

  • Publication number: 20130229078
Abstract: An example rotating electrical machine includes a stator assembly, a rotor, and a controller. The stator assembly has two or more stator control coils and is centered on a Z axis that is perpendicular to an XY plane defined by mutually perpendicular X and Y axes. The rotor is configured to rotate about a rotational axis that is nominally collinear with the Z axis and has a magnet array that provides a magnetic field configured to pass through the stator control coils. The controller is configured to control the stator control coils to selectively generate magnetic fields that interact with the magnetic field of the magnet array to: control rotation of the rotor about the second axis; and one or both of: control translation of the rotor in the XY plane; and control rotation of the rotor about the X axis and the Y axis.

  • Publication number: 20120096983
Abstract: An improved flywheel including an improved connection between an rotating interior component and an peripheral component. The connection includes a plurality of interfaces which connect the interior component and the peripheral component have radial compliance so as to deform when tensile forces resulting from the rotation of the interior component are transferred to the plurality of interfaces without transferring the tensile forces to the peripheral component.

  • Publication number: 20120098370
Abstract: This invention improves the operation of flywheels by allowing rotation about an inertial axis without the generation of imbalance forces that arise from the use of bearings to support the rotating components of the flywheel. The system uses periodic positional corrections to the rotating components of the flywheel so as to ensure that the system rotates within a predetermined boundary without continuously confining the rotating components to rotate about their geometric axis.

  • Patent number: 5699539
Abstract: A virtual memory system and method enable a computer system to use a virtual memory address space larger than the size of physical primary memory while swapping few, if any, pages out to secondary memory. Primary memory is divided into a work space, used for storing uncompressed pages in current use, and a "Compression Heap". A MappedOut storage space, which includes the Compression Heap and a portion of secondary memory, is used to store all pages swapped out of the work space. A virtual memory manager dynamically determines the number of pages of primary memory which need to be included in the work space, and moves pages of primary memory into the work space from the Compression Heap as needed. Pages are selected to be swapped out of the work space to the MappedOut storage space on the basis of memory usage data.
