  • Patent number: 7174065
Abstract: An optical switching fabric with an optical to electrical converter in the output plane. The optical switching fabric has an input plane with at least one input. The input plane provides at least a first optical signal (e.g., a first set of optical signals). The optical switching fabric has an output plane. The optical switching fabric has an interconnection mechanism for receiving the first set of optical signals and directing each received optical signal to a predetermined location in the output plane. The output plane has at least one optical to electrical converter (e.g., a plurality of optical to electrical converters) for receiving the directed optical signals and responsive thereto for generating a set of corresponding electronic output signals.

  • Publication number: 20050031255
Abstract: An input optical fiber, an output optical fiber, a pair of directing elements, and a detector form an alignment channel in an optical switch. The optical switch includes one or more alignment channels. The input optical fiber and the output optical fiber in each alignment channel are dedicated to propagating an alignment beam of light through the optical switch. The dedicated directing elements direct the alignment beam of light to the dedicated output optical fiber from the dedicated input optical fiber. The detector receives the alignment beam of light from the dedicated output optical fiber and generates a signal representative of the alignment beam of light. The signal is transmitted to a controller, which generates a correction signal for an array of directing elements. The correction signal causes all of the directing elements in the array to be adjusted in order to minimize losses in optical signal power.

  • Patent number: 6819821
Abstract: An optical switch has a plurality of input ports and a plurality of output ports. The optical switch features a fan-out fan-in architecture has a fan-out stage, a fan-in stage, and a coupling mechanism. The fan-out stage is coupled to the plurality of input ports and has a first orientation. The fan-in stage is coupled to the plurality of output ports and has a second orientation. The coupling mechanism optically couples the fan-out stage with the fan-in stage and maintains a predetermined relationship between the first orientation of the fan-out stage and the second orientation of the fan-in stage.

  • Patent number: 6810066
Abstract: A light source for generating and coupling light from a first wavelength into an optical fiber. The light source includes an output laser having a first optical cavity that includes a bottom mirror located outside of the optical fiber, and a top mirror that includes a reflector located within the optical fiber. An active region between the top and bottom mirrors generates light of the first wavelength, preferably through optical pumping at a second wavelength. The reflector is preferably a Bragg reflector and may include a mechanism for altering the wavelength of the light reflected thereby as well as the distance between the top and bottom mirrors. The pumping light is preferably generated by a pumping laser that includes a second electrically pumped optical cavity having a top mirror that is electrically connected to the bottom mirror of the first optical cavity.

  • Publication number: 20030059158
Abstract: A broadcast network for broadcasting an optical signal to a plurality of end users at different locations. The network employs a multi-optical-fiber cable with a plurality of individual fibers, where the number of individual fibers corresponds to the number of end users. An optical transmitter is provided for launching the optical signal to be broadcast into all the individual fibers. As the optical fiber cable passes each user, an individual optical fiber associated with the particular end user is split off from the multi-optical-fiber cable and terminates at the particular end user. The network includes a branch point, where the individual fibers branch out to the individual users.
