Publication number: 20240143270Abstract: Example techniques relate to changing a playback device mode based on a device base. In an example implementation, a first playback device operates in a first mode where it is connected to a first network and plays back audio content while in the first mode. The playback device detects connection of the first playback device to a device base and while the first playback device is on the device base, detects connection to a second network. The first playback device switches from operating in the first mode to operating in a second mode. The first playback device forms a stereo pair configuration with a second playback device over the second network in the second mode. While in the second mode, the first playback device plays back a first channel of audio content in synchrony with the second playback device playing back a second channel of the audio content.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 5, 2023Publication date: May 2, 2024Inventors: Jonathan P. Lang, Christopher D. Butts

Patent number: 11947870Abstract: A computing device is configured to perform functions comprising: receiving via a network microphone device of a media playback system, a voice command detected by at least one microphone of the network microphone device, wherein the media playback system comprises a plurality of zones, and the network microphone device may be a member of a default playback zone. The computing device may be further configured to perform functions comprising: dynamically selecting an audio response zone from the plurality of zones to play an audio response to the voice input and foregoing selection of the default playback zone. The selected zone may comprise a playback device, and the dynamically selecting may comprise determining that the network microphone device is paired with the playback device. The computing device may cause the playback device of the selected zone to play the audio response.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2022Date of Patent: April 2, 2024Assignee: Sonos, Inc.Inventors: Jonathan P. Lang, Mark Plagge

Patent number: 11907610Abstract: Example techniques may involve guest access to a media playback system. A guest may use a guest control device, such as a smartphone or tablet, to control aspects of a host's media playback system. In addition, the guest may temporarily register their user account of a streaming audio service with the host's media playback system, which enables playback of audio content from that service by one or more playback devices of the media playback system. When the guest control device de-registers from the host's media playback system, retrieval of audio content from the streaming audio service is disabled.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2022Date of Patent: February 20, 2024Assignee: Sonos, Inc.Inventors: Paul Bates, Lee Keyser-Allen, Jonathan P. Lang, Diane Roberts, Nicholas A. J. Millington

Patent number: 11900937Abstract: Example techniques involve suppressing a wake word response to a local wake word. An example implementation involves a playback device receiving audio content for playback by the playback device and providing a sound data stream representing the received audio content to a voice assistant service (VAS) wake-word engine and a local keyword engine. The playback device plays back a first portion of the audio content and detects, via the local keyword engine, that a second portion of the received audio content includes sound data matching one or more particular local keywords. Before the second portion of the received audio content is played back, the playback device disables a local keyword response of the local keyword engine to the one or more particular local keywords and then plays back the second portion of the audio content via one or more speakers.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2022Date of Patent: February 13, 2024Assignee: Sonos, Inc.Inventor: Jonathan P. Lang

Publication number: 20240029731Abstract: Disclosed herein are example techniques for voice detection by multiple NMDs. An example implementation may involve one or more servers receiving, via a network interface, data representing multiple audio recordings of a voice input spoken by a given user, each audio recording recorded by a respective NMD of the multiple NMDs, wherein the voice input comprises a detected wake-word. Based on respective sound pressure levels of the multiple audio recordings of the voice input, the servers (i) select a particular NMD of the multiple NMDs and (ii) forego selection of other NMDs of the multiple NMDs. The servers send, via the network interface to the particular NMD, data representing a playback command that corresponds to a voice command in the voice input represented in the multiple audio recordings, wherein the data representing the playback command causes the particular NMD to play back audio content according to the playback command.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 25, 2023Publication date: January 25, 2024Inventors: Jonathon Reilly, Gregory Burlingame, Christopher Butts, Romi Kadri, Jonathan P. Patent number: 11778378Abstract: Example techniques may provide volume enhancements to a media playback system. An example implementation involves a first playback device in a first playback configuration playing audio at a first volume level and storing the first volume level in association with the first playback configuration. The first playback device receives instructions to change to a second playback configuration. Based on receiving the instructions, the first playback device joins a synchrony group with a second zone and adjusts the first playback device to play audio at a second volume level which is based on a volume level of a second playback device in the second zone. While in the second playback configuration, the first playback device receives instructions to change to the first playback configuration and, based on the instructions, leaves the synchrony group and adjusts the first playback device to play audio content at the stored first volume level.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2021Date of Patent: October 3, 2023Assignee: Sonos, Inc.Inventors: Jerome Agustin, Jonathan P. Lang, Mark W. Triplett
