Abstract: A small aperture recessed lighting apparatus includes a housing assembly, a lighting module, and a trim. The housing assembly includes a housing defining a cavity and an aperture, a heatsink subassembly disposed within the cavity and movably coupled to the housing, and a spring that applies a force to move the heatsink subassembly until the trim abuts an installation surface (e.g., a ceiling). In this manner, the lighting apparatus can accommodate drywall with different thicknesses without sacrificing light output or lighting efficiency. The cavity of the housing is divided into a wiring cavity and a heatsink cavity containing at least the heatsink subassembly and the aperture. The housing assembly further includes a wiring hub to make wiring connections with an external electrical system. The wiring hub is removable through the aperture using a wire door subassembly, which, when opened, provides access to the wiring cavity from the heatsink cavity.

The sidewall defines a second opening smaller than the first opening. The sidewall is configured to support a lighting module designed for the second trade size. The mud-in plate assembly is implemented as part of a retrofit recessed lighting installation that utilizes components from the previously installed recessed lighting fixture, such as a housing, wiring, or a junction box, and does not require removal of drywall.
