    Abstract: The invention relates to optical communication devices, light emission devices and optical communication methods. Aspects of the present invention provide methods and devices enable provision of modulated output optical signals without providing modulation of total photon populations of cavities of associated lasers. Such avoids or minimizes bandwidth restrictions associated with conventional methods or devices which modulate total photon populations within cavities of lasers. One aspect of the invention includes an optical communication method including providing a data signal comprising data to be communicated and emitting light using a laser. The method further includes modulating the laser across a lasing mode transition responsive to the data signal. The emitting further includes emitting the light during a plurality of lasing modes of the laser to communicate the data responsive to the modulating.

    Abstract: A chip mounted enclosure (“CME”) comprises a base formed by an integrated circuit chip, a transducer element disposed on the integrated circuit chip, a side piece surrounding the transducer element that is coupled to the base, and a top piece coupled to the side piece. A method of making a CME comprises mounting a transducer element to a planar surface of an integrated circuit chip, where the planar surface forms a base of the CME. A side piece is fabricated to surround the transducer element. A top piece of the CME is placed on the side piece. Individual CMEs can be fabricated from a wafer assembly, where transducer elements, each respectively mounted to an integrated circuit wafer having corresponding integrated circuit chips, are individually surrounded by a side piece structure that is bonded to the integrated circuit wafer. Individual CMEs are formed by singulating the wafer assembly.

    Abstract: A process for the production of liquid meta-rich triaryl phosphate esters having low triphenyl phosphate content and low viscosity comprises (a) an alkylation stage wherein a phenol is reacted with an olefin having 2 to 12 carbon atoms in the presence of a strong acid catalyst to give a reaction product comprising a mixture of meta and para alkylated phenols; and (b) a transalkylation stage wherein the mixture of alkylated phenols from the alkylation stage is heated in the presence of a strong acid catalyst to increase the meta isomer content of the mixture to at least 25% whilst maintaining a phenol level below 22%; and (c) a phosphorylation stage wherein the mixture of alkylated phenols from the transalkylation stage is reacted with a phosphorylating agent; and wherein the strong acid catalyst used in stages (a) and (b) is a Bronsted acid having an acid strength of less than zero. Preferred catalysts are activated clays such as bentonite, montmorillonite or Fullers Earth clay.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of a phosphate ester is disclosed. A triaryl phosphate is reacted with an alcohol in the presence of a catalytic quantity of a base to produce the phosphate ester product. The base has a base strength of less than 11, and is preferably potassium fluoride or potassium carbonate. Trialkyl phosphates, dialkyl monoaryl phosphates, monoalkyl diaryl phosphates, and mixtures of these compounds can be produced by this process.
