    Abstract: A modular control system for a mineral extraction system includes a first control module positioned at a first location within a riser of the mineral extraction system and a second control module positioned at a second location within the riser closer to a wellhead of the mineral extraction system than the first location. The first control module includes a first electronics module configured to output and receive control signals, an energy storage unit, and a hydraulics system configured to generate a flow of pressurized fluid. The second control module includes a second electronics module communicatively coupled to the first electronics module and configured to output and receive additional control signals, and valves communicatively coupled to the second electronics module, fluidly coupled to the hydraulics system, and configured to adjust operations of the mineral extraction system.

    Abstract: A monitor for optical fibers includes a housing configured for use in a subsea environment, a light source, an optical sensor, and a controller coupled to the light source and to the optical sensor. In some embodiments, the monitor further includes a power source. In some embodiments, the monitor further includes a transceiver. In some embodiments, the monitor is coupled to an optical fiber system being run into a subsea well. The monitor tests the integrity of the optical fiber system during the running of the optical fiber system while the monitor is subsea. In some embodiments, the monitor is coupled to a subsea tree, and tests the integrity of the optical fiber system after running the optical fiber system into the well. In some embodiments, the monitor sends a signal to indicate the condition of the optical fiber system while the monitor is subsea.
