    Abstract: A dual format hybrid storage medium includes a non-recordable section in which data to be reproduced is written and in which data cannot be updated, and a recordable section in which data in the non-recordable section having a high probability of error occurrence may be backed up. The high probability of error is determined based on a range of fluctuation of an RF envelope, an unstable phase locked loop signal, a value of a sum level or sub-beam added level of the reproduced data, an unstable focus lock signal, a range of fluctuation of a track error signal and a range of fluctuation of a focus error signal. A determination is made to test for errors if a freeze-frame is found, audio and video are out of sync, a data seek fails or a picture distortion or a picture mosaic effect occurs.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method determining an optimum recording power suitable for a disc loaded in a disc drive. The apparatus includes a pickup unit and a control unit. The pickup unit records data in a predetermined area on the disc and reproduces the recorded data from the disc. The control unit controls the disc drive to record data in the predetermined area of the disc using a preset reference recording power. The control unit detects a plurality of recording powers using reproduction signals of the predetermined area reproduced from the pickup unit and one or more reference values, and decides an optimum recording power for the disc based on the detected plurality of recording powers. Thus, the recording power used by an active layer of the disc can be prevented from varying due to hardware error in the disc drive with respect to various kinds of discs.

    Abstract: A disc which insures a normal performance of an optical disc driver (ODD) and a method of manufacturing the same by accounting for disc defects. A reflectivity of the disc is within a range of 45–70% and a birefringence of the disc is within a range of 100–150 nm. Since the acquisition and manufacture of marginal discs which account for defect factors are possible, the influence of the defect factors can be continuously limited. Thus, a predetermined quality of discs can be used in the ODD.
