The recording data has a content data set and a spurious data set that is difficult to distinguish from the content data set but will ignored by a legitimate player. The content data is associated with the content data set and the spurious data set. The spurious data set may be associated with control data that inhibit playing or correct playing of the content data. A ghost structure such as a ghost video title set my be provided by causing information in at least one of the video title set information, video manager information and the volume information file structure to reference a non-existent video title set or not reference an existing video title set. The recording medium may be an optical disc such as a DVD or its precursors.

Abstract: Copying apparatus has a reader operable to access locations of a recording medium to read both content data and navigational command data that determines the order in which a player of the recording medium will access the content data. A navigator executes a navigation command in accordance with navigation data read by the reader. A controller controls the location of the recording medium accessed by the reader in accordance with the result of the execution of a navigation command executed by the navigator so as to cause the reader to follow a navigation path through the content data defined by the navigation data and to cause a presentation data storer to store data for enabling recording of the content data for the navigational path.

Abstract: A data file reproduction system has a data file supplying apparatus that extracts video data and audio data from a received data file, compresses the extracted video and audio data and produces a compressed data file containing the compressed audio and video data together with meta or navigation data determined from the data file for enabling navigation of the original data file. The compressed data file is then copy-protected. Upon request, the copy-protected compressed data file is communicated to a reproduction apparatus which decompresses the compressed audio and video data of the received copy-protected compressed data file, encodes the decompressed audio and video data and produces a copy-protected reconstituted data file containing the encoded audio and video data together with the meta or navigation data determined from the copy-protected compressed data file, so enabling navigation of the copy-protected reconstituted data file, the same as the original data file.

Abstract: The invention provides a device driver for monitoring and controlling access to data on a computer readable medium. The device driver comprises an interface for access to a device-driver stack for a media drive, a detector for detecting the insertion of a computer readable medium in said media drive, and a monitor for monitoring data transfer from said computer readable medium. The monitor evaluates a behavior characteristic of an application accessing data on said computer readable medium, and indicates when said behavior characteristic fulfills predetermined criteria. A control system is responsive to said monitor for issuing at least one control output when said behavior characteristic fulfills said predetermined criteria. The invention also provides a method of monitoring and controlling access to data on a computer readable medium by means of the device driver.

Abstract: DVDs can be copy protected by incorporating regions which contain unreadable or subversive data within the data area (42). For example, such a region may be configured as a cell of a video object (VOB) (50) within a VOB file (51). Access to the region of subversive data is prevented during normal playback, for example, by ensuring that there are no pointers leading to the subversive region. To defeat such a copy protection method, the content on the copy protected optical disc is accessed by utilising the navigation provided for normal playback of the disc. Thus, the subversive regions are navigated around during copying of the disc. The accessed content is stored in a corresponding data area and, where subversive regions are identified, arbitrary data is incorporated within regions of the copy data area which correspond to regions of unreadable or subversive data in the original data area.

The bottom structure is adapted with a mounting post in a recessed area defined by opposing curved ledges to hold an optical disc for marking. The top structure is adapted with a removable tool having an embossed symbol for impressing a mark on the held optical disc by applying pressure to the top structure when the device is in a closed position.
