Patent number: 6580832Abstract: All macro blocks (MB) decided as an “all_0”, “all_255” or “intra predicted” mode are transmitted as an “intra not coded” mode. A receiving terminal also separates “all_0”, “all_255” and “intra predicted” from the “intra not coded” mode, referring to pixels of a lower layer. “Inter coded && MVD=0” and “Inter coded && MVD!=0” modes are represented as “Inter coded”, and “Inter not coded && MVD=0” and “Inter not coded && MVD!=0” modes are represented as “Inter not coded”. As its result, coding modes on an I-picture can be reduced to two modes and coding modes on a P-picture, or a B-picture, can be lessened to four modes.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2001Date of Patent: June 17, 2003Assignee: Hyundai Curitel, Inc.Inventors: Jae-Kyoon Kim, Jin-Hak Lee, Joo-Hee Moon, Sung-Moon Chun, Hae-Kwang Kim

Patent number: 6421384Abstract: A method and system for contour-based motion estimation for use with video images. The invention establishes corresponding contours (404, 414) in two images (402, 412) in a sequence of images, determines a motion vector which includes how the first contour (404) moved to become the second contour (414), and transmits the motion vector of the contour (414) in order to permit accurate display of the second video image (412). Preferably, boundary lines are removed from the contours before a comparison is made. The invention is computationally efficient and economical from a data transmission point of view, while enabling the production of accurate image.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1998Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Assignee: Hyundai Curitel, Inc.Inventors: Jae-Won Chung, Cheol-Soo Park, Joo-Hee Moon, Jae-Kyoon Kim

Patent number: 6377622Abstract: A plurality of layers having other resolution are coded in order to encode scalably shape information. A base layer having the lower resolution is coded and transmitted to a decoder, and an enhancement layer is coded by employing a scan interleaving method from the base layer. A scan order of vertical and horizontal scannings is decided according to a generation frequency of TSD (transitional sample data) and ESD (exceptional sample data) and the number of coding bits on the base layer, or a type of boundary lines on images. When the scan order is decided, additional information indicating the scan order is transmitted to the decoder. The base layer is also coded and transmitted to the decoder. In case that the scan order is decided according to the horizontal and vertical of the boundary lines on an image of the base layer, it is no need to transmit the additional information indicating the scan order on the received base layer and execute the decoding in the same order as the coded scan order.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1998Date of Patent: April 23, 2002Assignee: Hyundai Electronics Ind. Patent number: 6307976Abstract: An apparatus and method of adaptively coding/decoding interlace shape information estimates the amount of motion with respect to the binary alpha block (BAB). A type of the BAB is determined according to the estimated amount of motion. When the BAB falls under a type which needs coding differences between pixel pairs in each line pair comprising an odd and an adjacent even line are calculated and summed up to compute an error of the frame. Differences between pixel pairs in consecutive odd line pairs and differences between pixel pairs in consecutive even line pairs are calculated and summed up to compute an error of individual fields. When the error of the frame is larger than that of the separate fields, field type coding where coding is independently performed with respect to each field is selected. When the error of the separate fields is larger than that of the frame, frame type coding where coding is performed with respect to the frame is selected.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1998Date of Patent: October 23, 2001Assignee: Hyundai Electronics Ind.
