Abstract: A method of discriminating an optical disc type and an apparatus thereof. The method for an optical disc system of recording and/or reproducing an optical disc that includes an optical pickup having a laser diode, an object lens, and a light receiving device, checks a track error signal while moving the object lens to upward/downward, and discriminates an optical disc type by using the magnitude of the checked track error signal. The method and apparatus discriminate the disc type in the initial stage of focusing where the object lens moves to upward/downward.

  • Patent number: 7369474
Abstract: A plurality of types of writable discs on which wobbles having a predetermined frequency containing absolute addresses and/or various pieces of information on the writable discs can be discriminated by controlling only focusing and using an amplitude of a wobble signal or a wobble PLL lock signal that has passed through a phase locked loop. Accordingly, a discrimination time can be reduced and a disc in an unrecorded state can also be discriminated.

  • Patent number: 7362693
Abstract: An optical data storage system writes or reads information with respect to an optical storage medium using an optical pickup including a solid immersion optical system or a solid immersion lens for generating a near-field and emitting a light beam. The optical storage medium includes a recording layer which is formed on a surface of an optical transmissive layer opposite to another surface of the optical transmissive layer which opposes the solid immersion optical system or solid immersion lens. The thickness of the optical transmissive layer is larger than one wavelength of the light beam. The interval between the surfaces of the solid immersion lens or solid immersion optical system and the optical transmissive layer is smaller than one wavelength of the light beam. Thus, the light beam reflected from the inside of an air gap and the inside of the optical storage medium between the air gap and the recording layer does not function as noise with respect to the light reflected from the recording layer.

  • Patent number: 7315500
Abstract: An optical recording medium storing information for regarding data in the current sector as data in a linking loss area, and an apparatus and method providing linking data. The data link method includes dividing an error correction code block having a predetermined size into a plurality of sectors and checking data type identification information which indicates whether or not data in each sector is linking data; and replacing main data of a sector with predetermined data according to the result of checking the data type identification information. According to the above method, data type information is checked to determine whether or not to replace main data of the current sector with dummy data. By doing so, error occurrence of the prior art can be prevented and block error correction is carried out more effectively.

  • Patent number: 7310291
Abstract: A method and apparatus for tracking error detection in an optical disk reproduction system. The tracking error detecting apparatus generates a tracking error signal as a difference signal of optical detection signals generated by more than two optical detectors positioned along a diagonal line from a track center and includes binarizers which binarize each output of the optical detectors, phase locked loops (PLLs) which generate respective clock signals synchronized with the outputs of each of the binarizers, a phase difference detector which detects a phase difference between the synchronized signals output from the PLLs, and low-pass filters which filter the output of the phase difference detector to output the result as the tracking error signal. The tracking error detecting apparatus generates a tracking error signal which is not dependent on the lengths of pits or marks recorded on an optical disk, enhancing the reliability of the tracking error signal.

  • Patent number: 7099408
Abstract: A maximum error region determining unit determines a region having a maximum likelihood of error from a channel signal y(t). An optimal path searching unit uses only an error signal at the region having a maximum likelihood of error to find a minimum error generation path and to correct the error signal. A signal recovery unit applies a predetermined algorithm to the channel signal y(t) in which a part of the signal has been corrected by the optimal path searching unit in order to recover an original recorded signal ak. The signal processing apparatus and method search for an optimal path of a channel signal only in the maximum error generation region, thereby reducing complexity and simplifying implementing hardware while allowing for signal processing without change in hardware where changes in a channel model or conditions of an input signal occur.
