  • Patent number: 9148357
Abstract: A system and method of communicating with a plurality of different types of devices. A device driver is defined for each type of device. The device driver creates and maintains a set of channels for each device; each channel represents a property of the device. Newly acquired data received from one of the devices is received at the device driver and published to the channel associated with the data. Publishing the newly acquired data to the channel associated with the data includes storing the newly acquired data in a channel database with a time stamp corresponding to the time the data was received. Control information for one of the devices is received at the device driver and associated with one of the channels. The control information is passed to the device being controlled.

  • Patent number: 8847783
Abstract: A local area utility network includes a utility, a low-speed backhaul between the utility and a utility provider, and a high-speed broadband network interface module in the utility coupling the utility directly to a broadband network. A plurality of utilities is coupled via a wireless mesh home area utility network. The low-bandwidth backhaul is operable to communicate at least one of billing, pricing, and load control events to a utility provider, and the high-speed broadband network connection to a home automation system.

  • Publication number: 20140266592
Abstract: A system and method for adding a gateway to a first device having a first network connector. An embedded gateway module includes a processor, a memory connected to the processor and first and second network interfaces, wherein the first network connection uses a first network protocol and the second network connection uses a second network protocol. The embedded gateway module is installed in the first device, wherein installing includes sharing the first device's first network connector. The gateway then connects the gateway through the first network to a device manager application at a remote location, connects the gateway module to the second network, installs gateway program data for receiving data from a second device over the second network and storing the received data as channels of data and installs presentation program data for presenting the channel data to applications running on the cloud.

  • Patent number: 8462707
Abstract: Wireless mesh network nodes in a mesh network are operable to join a desired wireless mesh network in a multi-network environment. The nodes search for a compatible mesh network, find a compatible mesh network, join the found compatible mesh network, indicate whether the joined mesh network is the desired mesh network, and receive input causing the network node to withdraw from the joined mesh network and search for other mesh networks to join if desired network has not been joined.

  • Publication number: 20130114582
Abstract: A wireless mesh network system includes a first wireless mesh network device supporting a first wireless mesh network device protocol. An application supporting a second wireless mesh network device protocol is executed, and a driver translates between the application's second wireless mesh network device protocol and the first wireless mesh network device protocol such that the application can exchange data with the first wireless mesh network device.

  • Patent number: 8036138
Abstract: Various embodiments include a method and system for optimizing the initial configuration of cyclic sleeping devices on a wireless network. The devices, or nodes, may need additional configuration by a configuration device after being placed on the network. Some nodes may sleep and not report in to the configuration device causing the configuration device to reach out to these non-reporting nodes. The configuration device may have limited resources with which to transmit the configuration to the nodes, and so the network can be efficiently configured if the configuration device reaches out to non-reporting nodes when it does not expect to use its transmission resources to configure a reporting node. This can be accomplished by maintaining a list of nodes yet to be configured, using the node configuration and reporting times to determine periods in which the configuration device's transmission resources will be idle, contacting non-reporting nodes during those periods.
