Abstract: An explosive pellet for characterizing a fracture in a subterranean formation is provided. The pellet can include a casing having a detonation material and an explosive material disposed within the casing. The pellet can also include a nonexplosive material moveably disposed within the casing. Movement of the nonexplosive material can generate a predetermined amount of energy in the form of friction-generated heat sufficient to detonate the explosive material.

  • Patent number: 7387165
Abstract: A system for completing a well with multiple zones of production includes a casing having a plurality of valves that are integrated therein for isolating each well zone. Communication is established between each underlying formation and the interior of the casing, and a treatment fluid is delivered to each of the multiple well zones. Mechanisms for actuating one or more of the valves include, but are not limited to, a dart, a drop ball, a running tool, and a control line actuating system.

  • Patent number: 7325616
Abstract: A system and method for completing a well with multiple zones of production includes a casing having a plurality of flapper valves integrated therein for isolating each well zone and a perforating gun string for selectively perforating the casing and underlying formation at each well zone to establish communication between the formation and the interior of the casing and to facilitate delivery of treatment fluid to each of the multiple well zones. The system and method may include mechanisms for selectively actuating each flapper valve, such as by detonating a perforating gun in a perforating gun string. The system and method may include providing a perforating gun string having multiple guns, each gun selectively detonated at a corresponding well zone, and the gun string being stored in a lubricator at the surface between alternating sequences of perforating and treating the well zones.

  • Publication number: 20060144590
Abstract: A system and method for completing a well with multiple zones of production is provided. For example, a well completion system is provided including one or more polished bore receptacles installed in a casing and a fluid delivery device having at least one seal assembly for selectively isolating a selected well zone and delivering a fluid to the selected zone. Furthermore, a perforating gun may be connected to the fluid delivery device to facilitate perforating a target well zone, isolating the target well zone, and treating the target well zone in a single trip.

  • Patent number: 6942033
Abstract: A technique that is usable with a subterranean well includes orienting shaped charges of a perforating gun to extend partially around a longitudinal axis of the gun. The perforating gun is oriented in the well to direct the shaped charges away from a water boundary. In response to this orientation of the perforating gun, the shaped charges are fired. The perforating gun and shaped charges may also be oriented in a deviated well to compensate for the anisotropic permeability of a formation.
