  • Patent number: 7458250
Abstract: An ion sensing arrangement for a small internal combustion engine includes an ion sensor placed in the engine's combustion chamber to measure the conductivity of the combusted fuel-air mixture. Scaling circuitry, such as variable voltage divider circuitry, is connected to be in electrical communication with an output of the ion sensor. The scaling circuitry operates to adjust the output signal to a value appropriate for measurement. Preferably, the scaling circuitry adjusts the output signal based on a comparison with a reference value.

  • Publication number: 20080011272
Abstract: An apparatus and method for use with an internal combusting engine that accurately control ignition timing. Reference signals are created which are used to determine both the mean engine speed as well as irregular speed. Control logic uses this engine information to accurately predict the future rotational position of the engine. The ignition timing is then adjusted to release the spark at the appropriate time.

  • Publication number: 20070209635
Abstract: An apparatus and method for use with a carbureted internal combustion engine that accurately controls the amount of fuel that passes through the carburetor into the combustion chamber of the engine. A controlled triggering system controls the activation and deactivation of a solenoid. The solenoid, in turn, operates a plunger that varies the flow of fuel during the fuel intake cycle of the engine depending on the amount of fuel needed by the engine under any operating load. Thus, an engine can run leaner under partial load and run richer during periods of load and acceleration. By controlling the air-to-fuel ratio lower engine emissions and fuel consumption can be achieved.

  • Publication number: 20050235742
Abstract: The invention concerns a method to measure parameters in the combustion chamber of a piston engine that comprises an ignition system. An alternating voltage is applied across the secondary winding of the ignition coil and the value of the current that arises in a measurement circuit that co-operates with the secondary winding is measured. The value of the current depends on the resistance (R1) of the measurement circuit, on the inductance (L1) and resistance of the secondary winding, and on the impedance of the combustion chamber, i.e. on its capacitance (C1) and its resistance. For example, top dead centre, the pressure in the cylinder, analysis of the ionic current and change of the burning time can be determined by means of the method.

  • Publication number: 20030139273
Abstract: Packaging containers of single-use disposable type which are manufactured from flexible paper/plastic laminate normally display sealing fins (3) which extend over one or more of the walls (2) of the packaging container (1). In parallelepipedic packaging containers, triangular corner flaps (4) moreover occur over which extend the sealing fins (3). The corner flaps are folded down and secured on the final formation of the packaging container against its side wall. This however entails that the material with many times thickness must be double-folded, which entails deformations and stretching which damages the packaging material so that this no longer remains completely liquid-tight and gas-tight. According to the invention, the above-outlined drawbacks may be obviated in that the fibre layer included in the material is heated to a temperature of between 80 and 250° C.

  • Patent number: 6029640
Abstract: A method for generation of a low test voltage is used for the purpose of detecting an ionization current in the spark gap of an internal combustion engine. The voltage is generated by a controllable ignition magneto (5) arranged in order to charge (2) an ignition capacitor (4). The voltage is applied (3) to the primary side of the ignition device after generation of a spark and after the decay of the spark, after which the ionization current is detected (11) on the secondary side of the ignition device.

  • Patent number: 6018986
Abstract: A method of carrying out ionic current measurement in an internal combustion engine, using a lean fuel mixture which requires an increased burning duration, comprises the steps of (a) generating an ignition spark, (b) detecting initiation of combustion of the lean fuel mixture by the ignition spark, (c) cutting off the ignition spark within 20 microseconds after the initiation of combustion and (d) thereafter performing the ionic current measurement. The combustion start can be detected by measuring the change in the burning potential and/or the burning current, detected at the low-tension side of the secondary coil of the ignition system, using leak capacitances of the ignition coil, or by using a separate winding of the ignition coil. The ignition spark is cut off by a controllable ignition magneto.

  • Patent number: 5072714
Abstract: The invention relates to a generator arrangement, in particular, ignition systems for internal combustion engines. The arrangement comprises a multi-legged core of magnetically conducting material with the legs radially projecting towards a cooperating magneto flywheel, which exhibits a section with unsymmetrical magnetic flux. The legs carry uniformly wound windings and are connected in two groups in the case of a one-cylinder internal combustion engine. The one group comprises two windings interconnected such that they only deliver an induced voltage when passed by the unsymmetrical section. The other group delivers an induced sum voltage. The voltage of the first mentioned group controls the ignition process whereas the second group charges a capacitor, component of the ignition system.

  • Patent number: 4757797
Abstract: A circuit for generating a charge voltage in a capacitive ignition system having an inductive source for producing a voltage substantially below the required charge voltage. The circuit includes, in series, an electronic switch and a resistor connected across the voltage source to form a controllable current path. Connected parallel thereto is a charging circuit for the capacitive ignition system. A control circuit is connected across the resistor and is adapted to control the state of the electronic switch. The control circuit also has a self-holding circuit. During the build-up of the source voltage, the electronic switch is in its closed state resulting in a heavy current flow therethrough. This in turn results in a build-up of voltage across the resistor actuating the control circuit. The control circuit causes the electronic switch to change into a cutoff state, thereby causing a build-up of the charge voltage for the capacitive ignition system.
