  • Patent number: 12097931
Abstract: Disclosed is a vessel including a hull and a system providing an air lubricating layer between the bottom and water, including a cavity defined by sidewalls, a top wall and an interface plane, in which water mixes with air due the Kelvin Helmholtz effect. The sidewalls extend from a dagger-shaped nose section at the front end to the rear end of the cavity and diverge so a distance between the sidewalls increases along the length of the cavity when going in a rearward direction. The diverging cavities provide a stable air lubrication layer that covers a relatively large area of the bottom, so the number of cavities can be reduced. The alignment of the diverging cavities with the streamlines has relatively large tolerances so construction is simplified and can be carried out in a cost-effective manner. The diverging sidewalls lead to reduced formation of vortices and reduced drag.

  • Patent number: 9862459
Abstract: A vessel (1) has at least three cavities that are distributed across the bottom in the length direction along a line extending from the center line near the bow, to a respective side. Furthermore, the vessel accommodates for each cavity or pair of cavities on opposite sides of the center line at a predetermined length position, a corresponding compressor for injecting air into the cavity at a pressure substantially corresponding to the hydrostatic pressure in each cavity. Each cavity (33) may include a deflector that has an elongate part (29, 34, 34?) extending in the length direction of the cavity over at least at least 5%, preferably at least 10% of the cavity length L. • Patent number: 3992818
Abstract: The apparatus includes a frame structure and a combination grinding and polishing mechanism mounted for horizontal travel thereon. The frame structure includes a bed for supporting welded sheets thereon with the face of the welded seam to be ground and polished facing upwardly. The grinding and polishing mechanism is mounted for horizontal travel on an overhead support beam positioned directly above the bed on which the welded sheets are positioned. The grinding mechanism is comprised of an endless grinding belt rotatably supported between a support wheel at one end where the belt contacts the welded seam and a roller at the other end. The support wheel is mounted for rotation on a pivotally mounted arm and is connected to a drive motor for driving the belt. The motor is mounted with its rotational axis in alignment with the pivot point of the arm. The grinding mechanism further includes a retract mechanism for raising and lowering the grinding belt into and out of its seam grinding position.
