  • Patent number: 5238334
Abstract: The present invention discloses a ceramic cutting tool insert for chip-cutting machining. It comprises a body of generally polygonal or round shape having an upper face, an opposite face and at least one clearance face intersecting upper and lower faces to define cutting edges. The ceramic material is alumina based and comprises at least 10-40 volume % single crystal whiskers and/or platelets of carbides, nitrides and/or borides of Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta and/or Nb or solid solutions thereof. The non-plane chip-forming surfaces of the insert comprise recessions and elevations that are formed in an uniaxial cold pressing operation.

  • Patent number: 5011340
Abstract: A double-sided insert includes upper and lower rake faces. The rake faces include chip faces lying on the uppermost and lowermost planes of the insert to respectively define a chip deforming face and a holder-engaging supporting face. Those rake faces are so located that the rake face(s) serving as a support face(s) is disposed closely adjacent the cutting edge to minimize stresses imposed on the insert during a cutting operation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 26, 1989
Date of Patent: April 30, 1991
    Assignee: Sandvik AB
Inventors: Lars T. Pettersson, Jorgen V. Wiman
  • Patent number: 4988242
Abstract: An insert for chip forming machining includes a polygonal body provided with a cutting edge and a chip former. The chip former comprises a plurality of ridges whereby the distance between adjacent ridges diminishes in a direction towards the middle of the cutting edge, whereby the insert cuts a conical corrugated chip which is forced away from the workpiece during machining.

    Filed: September 19, 1989
Date of Patent: January 29, 1991
    Assignee: Sandvik AB

  • Patent number: 4801224
Abstract: The invention relates to a tool for chip removal comprising a cutting insert mechanically clampable within a slot of a holder. The insert is clamped by the resilient force arising during deflection of a clamping arm provided in the holder. The insert and the clamping arm are engageable at contact regions separated from each other, a first contact region of which forms an acute angle relative to the lower side of the insert.

  • Patent number: 4572042
Abstract: The present invention relates to a cutting insert (11) for length turning, inwards turning and outwards transversal turning having a generally rhombic or triangular basic form with a cutting edge (14), a cutting edge (15) and a transversal turning edge (18). The transversal turning edge (18) is arranged to cut and break coarse but short chips (21) and the cutting edge (14) is at the same time arranged to cut fine and continuous chips (22) to obtain a good surface fineness during the transversal turning operation.
