  • Publication number: 20030086767
Abstract: A cutting insert, intended for chip removing machining includes a cutting geometry surface having a cutting edge from which extends a primary chamfer that transforms into a chip removing surface. The chip removing surface is inclined in a inwards/downwards direction in order to permit sinking of a chip being formed, and transforms into a deflection surface arranged to initiate deflection of the chip from the cutting insert. The angle of inclination of the chip removing surface does not exceed 18°. The level difference in elevation between the primary chamfer and the chip deflection surface amounts to maximally 0.20 mm.

  • Publication number: 20030077131
Abstract: A cutting insert, intended for chip removing machining, includes a body delimited by two opposite, first and second surfaces, which in the operative state of the cutting insert form an actively chip removing top surface and a bottom surface, respectively. The insert also includes at least one side surface, serving as a flank surface, which extends between the first and second surfaces. A cutting edge is formed between the flank surface and at least one of said first and second surfaces, in which a segment is included, which has the purpose of smoothening and facing the machined surface of the workpiece. The smoothening edge segment is divided into at least three different part edge segments, a first of which forms a tangent point and is surrounded by two part edge segments having longer radii (R22, R23) than the first edge part segment.

  • Patent number: 6244791
Abstract: An indexable insert for metal cutting having an upper surface, a bottom surface and side surfaces. At least a portion of the intersecting lines between the side surfaces and the upper surface generates a main cutting edge, a secondary cutting edge and a corner cutting edge. The corner portions of the upper side are provided with recesses. The corner cutting edge including at least two radiused edges having different radii. The first radiused edge, having a larger radius, being located adjacent to the main cutting edge and a second radiused edge, having a smaller radius, being located adjacent to the secondary cutting edge. Furthermore, the secondary cutting edge includes a radiused edge having a larger radius than the two aforementioned corner radiused edges and the recess includes a rear plane being so arranged that the chips hit a rear plane of the upper surface and break against the rear plane.

  • Patent number: 6238147
Abstract: A cutting insert for grooving operations includes a shank portion and a forward cutting head. The shank portion includes an upper surface, a bottom surface and side surfaces, wherein a line of intersection between the upper side and a forward clearance face forms a main cutting edge. Between the main cutting edge and a secondary cutting edge there is provided a corner cutting edge. The corner cutting edge comprises a primary curved edge with a first radius extending from the main cutting edge, and a secondary curved edge with a second radius, larger than the first radius, that extends from the primary edge to a side edge and oriented perpendicular to the main cutting edge. The cutting insert also comprises an upper side confined by two longitudinal ridges and an elongated chip forming recess therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6217263
Abstract: A rhombic shaped metal cutting insert is adapted for longitudinal turning and copy turning. Opposing nose corners of the insert form equal angles less than 60 degrees. A pair of side cutting edges converge toward each of the nose corners. The side cutting edges of each pair form obtuse angles with respective side cutting edges of the other pair. A longest diagonal extending through the insert intersects both of the nose corners and forms an acute angle relative to a diagonal which bisects both of the obtuse angles. Each nose corner has a corner cutting edge formed by a plurality of curved segments. First and second ones of those segments are disposed on opposite sides of the longest diagonal and together form an angle of about 90°. Situated between the first and second segments is a third segment which is intersected by the longest diagonal. Adjacently disposed ones of the curved segments at each corner have radii that are different from one another.

  • Patent number: 5924826
Abstract: A cutting insert is mounted by a rib-and-groove connection on a holder. The grooves are formed in a bottom surface of the insert, and the ribs extend from a holding surface of the holder. The ribs and grooves include mutually convergent sides configured such that a gap is formed between the holding surface and bottom surface, and between a top of each rib and a bottom of a respective groove.

Abstract: The presently claimed invention discloses a compound body of a wear resistant substrate with a surface coating, which body is suitable for wear parts and tools applications. The body includes top and bottom surfaces and at least one peripheral wall extending therebetween, the intersection of said peripheral wall and at least said top surface forming a cutting edge. The surface coating on said body is a diamond coating of a thickness of 1-30 .mu.m deposited directly from the gas phase in a reactor by CVD or PVD technique in a manner so as to ensure rigid bonding to said carbide substrate. • Patent number: 5743681
Abstract: An indexable cutting insert for metal machining, in particular turning, is formed with banana- or C-shaped protrusions (11) adjacent to each operative cutting corner. The concave side of the protrusion faces in a direction towards the cutting corner. In comparison with corresponding inserts without such a protrusion a better chip control is achieved. Thus, the chip flow is led away from the machined surface both at small and large cutting depths and the chips are broken into suitable lengths.
