  • Patent number: 8023371
Abstract: The invention relates to an optical drive (10) and a method for determining a reading and/or writing position of an optical drive (10). The optical drive (10) in accordance with the invention comprises control means (12) and at least three PLL units (20, 22, 24), wherein the control means (12) are adapted to control the three PLL units (20, 22, 24) to try to lock on to three different frequencies characteristic for an optical disc (26). The method in accordance with the invention comprises the step of controlling at least three PLL units (20, 22, 24) to try to lock on to three different frequencies characteristic for an optical disc (26). If the optical disc (26) is a Blue Ray Disc, the three different frequencies can be the HFM frequency, the wobble frequency, and the expected HF frequency.

  • Publication number: 20090122686
Abstract: The invention relates to a new method for focus capture in an optical drive comprising a collimator lens. Use is made of the pre-programmed collimator lens position to secure a baseline position of the laser spot at a position with respect to an optical record carrier placed in the optical drive such that the correct information layer on the optical record carrier is captured efficiently and accurately.

  • Publication number: 20080175123
Abstract: The invention discloses a method for reproducing from a multi-layer optical information carrier (1), e.g. dual layer media like a DVD or BD disc. Initially, light (5) is focused at a first information layer (L1), where the first layer has a range of parameter settings (SL1) for optimized reproducing of information in a specific optical drive. Secondly, reflected light (8) from the carrier is detected, and subsequently information showing the actual information layer (L1 or LO) the light (5) is focused on is provided. Due to an error the light may be focused on a “wrong”, second information layer (LO), where the second layer has a range of second layer parameter settings (SLO) for optimized reproducing of information in the specific optical drive. The invention provides an improved recovery chance by changing at least one first layer parameter setting to the corresponding second layer parameter setting prior to performing the refocusing to the intended layer (L1).

  • Publication number: 20080094944
Abstract: A method of controlling the writing power of a laser beam in an optical recorder and an optical recorder having means for controlling the writing power of the laser beam are provided. The invention is directed to a Walking Optimum Power Control (Walking OPC) during writing onto an optical storage medium having two storage layers. The method comprises the steps of: incrementing a first counter (20) when a writing power control is performed with respect to a writing operation onto the first storage layer (16); incrementing a second counter (22) when a writing power control is performed with respect to a writing operation onto the second storage layer (18); calculating a first waiting time between two writing power control operations with respect to the first storage layer (16) under consideration of the first counter (20); and calculating a second waiting time between two writing power control operations with respect to the second storage layer (18) under consideration of the second counter (22).
