  • Patent number: 6435244
Abstract: A method and apparatus for covering a roll core with a polymeric material, preferably a high performance thermoplastic material, is disclosed. The method includes first providing a cylindrical roll core having two ends, a length, and an outer surface. A spacer assembly is attached proximate one end of the roll core, the spacer assembly having a circumference greater than that of the roll core. After preheating to a desired temperature, the roll core is then placed within an apparatus in a substantially vertical orientation and held therein by suitable fixtures, e.g., opposed universal chucks. A length of mold tape is helically wound over the length of the roll core in a spaced-apart relationship therewith to define an application zone between the mold tape and the roll core outer surface. A filament formed of the polymeric material is extruded within the application zone and helically wound over the roll core outer surface so that the roll core is covered with the material.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4877472
Abstract: A method of making a bearing blanket for an extended nip press is disclosed. The method includes the steps of wrapping a reinforcing mat with uncured elastomeric polymer around a mandrel such that a central portion of the resultant blanket includes both the reinforcing mat and the elastomeric polymer, while a first and second lateral edge of the blanket includes only elastomeric polymer. The resultant blanket is removed from the mandrel and the first and second edges of the blanket are folded radially inwardly so that the edges inhibit the escape of lubricating oil from the extended nip press past the blanket.

  • Patent number: 4617091
Abstract: A headbox for delivering stock to a forming surface in a papermaking machine with the headbox having a slice chamber and a slice opening and having trailing elements positioned in the slice chamber extending transversely of the headbox with means anchoring the elements only at their upstream ends with the downstream portion unattached and constructed to be self-positionable so as to be solely responsive to forces exerted thereon by the stock flowing toward the slice with the elements having greater structural stiffness in the cross-machine direction so that the elements offer resistance to deflection in a cross-machine direction by transient pressure variations and offer minimal resistance to deformation of the fluid flow stream for balancing forces on opposite sides of the elements with the elements in one form being laminated with a plurality of anisotropic layers.

  • Patent number: 4566945
Abstract: A paper machine trailing element for use in a slice in a headbox wherein the trailing element is formed of laminations with a bead at the upper end for anchoring the element in a slice chamber with the bead formed of laminations with fibers on the outer surface in the machine direction and in the cross-machine direction within the bead so that the element has a greater stiffness in the machine direction at the upstream end with the element tapering to a thin tip at the downstream end and the downstream end formed of laminations with fibers extending in the cross-machine direction for a greater stiffness to minimize instability.
