  • Patent number: 5063737
Abstract: A particulate trap system for use in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine has an exhaust conduit with a main branch, a bypass branch, and an exhaust pressure regulating valve disposed within the main branch for selectively diverting exhaust gas through one of the branches. A particulate filter is disposed within the main branch and a burner assembly, having an outlet disposed upstream of the filter, is operable to raise the temperature of the filter to a level sufficient to incinerate particulates thereon. The exhaust pressure regulating valve is configured to act as a metering orifice when in a restrictive position so as to supply a metered amount of exhaust air to the burner while channeling a substantial portion of the exhaust flow through the bypass branch during the regeneration cycle of the system.

  • Patent number: 4987738
Abstract: A particulate trap system for use in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine has an exhaust conduit with a main branch, a bypass branch, and a diverter valve disposed therebetween for selectively diverting exhaust gas through one of the branches. A particulate filter is disposed within the main branch, and a burner assembly having an outlet disposed upstream of the filter is operable to raise the temperature of the filter to a level sufficient to incinerate particulates thereon. A burner supply conduit extending between the exhaust conduit and the burner, having a metering orifice disposed therein, supplies exhaust air to the burner when the diverter valve closes the main branch and channels the exhaust flow through the bypass branch during the regeneration cycle of the system.

  • Patent number: 4719892
Abstract: A cavity closure, such as an engine accessory or inspection cover, is provided having separate rim and central panel members secured together by a vibration absorbent elastomer which acts both to seal a gap between the memebrs and the outer periphery of the closed opening against leakage and to minimize noise generation by the central panel by damping panel vibrations and isolating the panel against the transmission of vibrations to it from the supporting rim and engine housing. A preferred manufacturing method involves forming the rim and central panel as a unit and then separating them by shearing to form opposed edges of identical configuration which are longitudinally displaced prior to applying the bead joining the members and providing sealing and vibration isolation.

  • Patent number: 4667628
Abstract: Arrangements for sound deadening vibration isolation mounting of an engine oil pan on an associated frame or block are provided wherein special flange opening gripping or guiding resilient seals combine with flange recesses, rubber-metal isolators and shoulder bolts or the like to aid installation of the pan and mounting means on an engine.

  • Patent number: 4527710
Abstract: A plate-like sealing element and method of making are disclosed by the specific embodiments of an engine air box cover and a water elbow attaching flange. The sealing members are formed from plate material using fine blanking to define the edges and partial shearing to accurately form a sealing groove along one surface and a stiffening rib extending from an opposite surface in a location directly opposite the sealing groove to further stiffen the sealing member.

  • Patent number: 4394853
Abstract: An engine oil pan is mounted in noise reducing vibration isolation from the associated engine by a mounting arrangement including a unitary resilient seal having lips that extend under the oil pan flange to retain the seal in assembly with the pan both during and after assembly of the pan to the engine block. Separate support members interconnect spacer sleeves that extend through gripping openings in the seal and limit compression of the seal by oil pan attaching bolts so as to maintain the vibration isolating qualities of the seal in assembly.
