  • Patent number: 4712955
Abstract: The present invention provides an expandable fastener assembly for use in materials which cannot be successfully fastened by conventional screw threads. The assembly includes an insert (20) constructed as a coil to expand uniformly along its convolutions and thereby exert a force upon the adjacent material (50). A fastener (30) has outer threads compatible with the inner threads of the insert (20) such that when a tightening or seating torque is applied to the fastener (30) it is transferred to the insert (20). The transferred force expands the insert (20) outwardly with respect to the fastener (30), without rotation of the insert (20) relative to rotation of the fastener (30). The invention is also provided with an anti-rotation feature to secure the fastener from rotational movement after installation.

  • Patent number: 4568228
Abstract: A lock ring and fastener which is manufactured with the lock ring connected thereto by metal tabs or a metal strip of the same parent material as the fastener. It is intended to be installed in a threaded bore of a workpiece as an insert or stud. The lock ring is displaced and the metal tabs or strip is broken by a special installation tool. This tool flattens any rough edges that remain on the insert or stud after installation. The internal grooves of the lock ring engage the external teeth of the insert or stud. The external teeth of the lock ring bite into the workpiece and by coacting with the external teeth of the insert or stud assist in preventing rotation of the insert or stud in the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4534101
Abstract: A method for installing a locking nut or bolt includes drilling a bore having at least two diameters in a surface of an element so as to accommodate a fastener assembly having a threaded shaft and a group of elements including a cylinder a locking ring, two retaining rings and a conical spring, serrating an area of the bore having the layer diameter, screwing the fastener assembly into the bore, applying a torque to the group of elements while suppressing the locking ring thereby engaging the locking ring into the serrated area of the bore, retracting an outer sleeve of the tool and tightening the group of elements.

  • Patent number: 4417380
Abstract: A method of securing a bearing either bushing, roller or ball bearing and a spacer or fitting into a soft non-ferrous material such as aluminum and materials of that hardness. A bearing of this invention containing an annular groove and adjacent forming shoulder or spacer, at least 1/2 a millimeter greater in diameter than the body of the bushing is inserted into a predrilled hole. A metal ring is formed in the annular groove as the shoulder is pressed into the parent material. This metal ring being a part of the parent material and being packed into the annular groove prevents retraction of the bearing or spacer during operation by its diameter being greater than the annular groove in the bearing. The material in the annular groove is of a lesser diameter than the body of the bearing and fitting and interfers with axial movement. The shoulder of the bearing or fitting has longitudinal grooves around its circumference.

  • Patent number: 4240393
Abstract: A valve guide for installation in cylinder heads of internal combustion engines which includes a hollow body, a beveled pilot flange, a locking flange to flow material into, an annular groove to receive and pack displaced material and lock the valve guide to the workpiece to prevent axial movement.

  • Patent number: 4179038
Abstract: A self-sealing flange assembly includes an elliptical shaped hole in a blind wall, the greatest diameter of which is larger than the smallest diameter of an elliptical shaped inner flange. Attached at a right angle to the surface of the flange is an internally or externally threaded nipple, bushing, stud or fastener. An annular groove located on the circumference of the flange contains a sealing means. At least one dimple at an apex of the elliptical flange locates the flange in situ when it is inserted through the wall opening and positioned thereon. An outer elliptical washer type element is tightened against the outer wall by rotation of a nut on the threads of the nipple, bushing, stud or rotating the bolt in the fastener, compressing the elliptical inner flange and sealing means against the inner wall forming a one piece leak proof assembly. The dimple used to locate the flange in situ also prevents rotation of the inner flange during the tightening process.

  • Patent number: 4077427
Abstract: A valve assembly for detecting leaks in a fluid system which includes an air-tight liquid chamber defined by a transparent sleeve enclosed within a removable cap having windows formed therebetween, the chamber being at least partially filled with liquid, and a plunger means provided with an orifice, including a tube means arranged to communicate between said orifice and liquid within the liquid chamber, wherein the lower end of the tube means is provided with a restraining and sealing means, whereby the upward movement is restricted thereby, and the liquid chamber is sealed during the open mode of the valve. The terminating end of the tube is formed having a beveled tip to allow ease of fluid discharge therefrom. The valve assembly is connected to the fluid line so as to allow the fluid to pass therethrough unimpeded.
