Patent number: 7240904Abstract: A secondary sealing element comprises a base body (12) made of a synthetic material and comprising a base portion (13) and a seal portion (14) which each comprise coaxially aligned, axially adjacent through bores (17, 31) for the passage of a component, and an annular disc element (25) accommodated in the base portion and comprising a through bore (30) coaxially aligned with the through bores in the base and seal portions and being made of a material which differs from that of the base body. In the unloaded state, the through bore (30) of the annular disc element (25) has a radial dimension d which is greater than that D2 of the through bore (31) in the seal portion (14) and smaller than that D1 in the base portion (13) of the base body (12). The annular disc element consists of a carbon material. An important field of application for the secondary sealing element is that of mechanical face seals for sealing relatively moveable components.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2003Date of Patent: July 10, 2007Assignee: Burgmann Industries GmbH & Co. Publication number: 20060232015Abstract: A slide ring seal assembly comprises at least one pair of interacting slide rings (4, 5) of which one is provided for mounting on a stationary part and the other is provided for rotating together with a rotating part and of which one is mounted in a manner that enables it to axially move and is axially pretensioned with a designated axial pretensioning force against the other slide ring by means of a spring bellows assembly (11). This spring bellows assembly comprises a first spring bellows (13) that, at one end, are supported on the respective slide ring and, at the other end, are supported on an annular divider element (12) mounted in a manner that enables it to axially move relative to the respective part, and comprises a second spring bellows (14) that, at one end, are supported on said divider element and, at the other end, are supported on the respective part.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 16, 2003Publication date: October 19, 2006Inventors: Günther Lederer, Josef Nosowicz, Jochen Reitberger, Andreas Schrüfer

Patent number: 6517078Abstract: A face seal device for use with components rotating at a high rotational speed includes a non-rotating face seal ring (5) and a rotary face seal ring (11). The rotary face seal ring is mounted in a loose fit for common rotation with a rotating component and includes a sealing face (6) which, in operation, is essentially radially aligned for cooperation with an opposite sealing face (16) of the non-rotating face seal ring. A heavy-mass-contributing element (22) is arranged to rotate in common with the rotating component and engages a portion of the rotary face seal ring. The center of gravity of the heavy-mass-contributing element is axially spaced from that of the rotary face seal ring, whereby, in operation, a torque directed towards the non-rotating face seal ring is applied to the rotary face seal ring. This torque arises from the centrifugal forces that correspond to the mass-contributing element and the spacing between the centers of gravity.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 2001Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Assignee: Burgmann Dichtungswerke GmbH and Co. KGInventors: Andreas Schruefer, Werner Wolf, Guenther Lederer, Peter Droescher, Josef Nosowicz, Georg Steigenberger

Patent number: 6341781Abstract: A sealing element for a face seal assembly including a bellows portion having mounting portions at its axial ends. One of the mounting portions is designed for non-rotational mounting on a component, e.g. a shaft, and the other for retaining an annular face member. The sealing element is formed, on at least the faces thereof exposed to a medium to be sealed, from a plastics material selected from a group of plastics materials comprising PEEK and ECTFE. The sealing element serves for applying a bias force to the annular face member. The sealing element enables the design of an uncomplicated, easily maintained, externally pressurised single action face seal assembly which is particularly suitable for sealing aggressive media.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2000Date of Patent: January 29, 2002Assignee: Burgmann Dichtungswerke GmbH & Co. KGInventors: Berthold Matz, Josef Nosowicz, Wolfgang Ries, Reinhard Svejkovsky

Patent number: 5722671Abstract: A seal arrangement for sealing a shaft with respect to a housing containing a fluid comprises a face seal exposed to a buffer gas on a portion thereof facing away from the fluid. Disposed upstream of the face seal at the fluid said portion thereof is a collecting chamber for receiving a leakage of the buffer gas having gained access to the fluid-side portion of the face seal. The collecting chamber is in communication with an external separating means for separating the gas phase from the fluid phase of a gas/fluid mixture having collected in the collecting chamber. The fluid phase can be returned into the interior of the housing.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 1997Date of Patent: March 3, 1998Assignee: Feodor Burgmann Dichtungswerke GmbH & Co.Inventors: Josef Nosowicz, Michael Riedl, Rudolf Kollinger

Patent number: 5058905Abstract: The sliding face (22) of a gas lubricated slide ring seal has a slide ring (20) which is displaceable in the axial direction at a wall (4) to be sealed and lies against the sliding face (21) of a mating ring (10) which is fastened on an intermediate sleeve (10) so as to be immovable and sealing. The intermediate sleeve is rotatably mounted by roller bearings (16) on the shaft (2) to be sealed and is sealed against the shaft by a dynamic sealing device (15). Between the shaft (2) and the intermediate sleeve (10) a coupling (17) is provided which couples the shaft with the intermediate sleeve (10) during rotation of the shaft in its regular direction of rotation (1'), thus driving the mating ring (19) and pumping gas from the chamber (6) to be sealed through conveying grooves (24) disposed in its sliding face (21) into the area between the two sliding faces 21, 22).Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1989Date of Patent: October 22, 1991Inventors: Josef Nosowicz, Rudolf Kollinger
