  • Patent number: 4438515
Abstract: Apparatus for protection of graphite electrodes of electric arc furnaces e.g. for steelmaking to reduce loss of graphite from sides of the electrode by oxidation has at least one generally arcuate spray unit and means for moving the spray unit towards and away from a side of the electrode. The spray unit has means for spraying protective matter towards the center of its arc. The apparatus permits protection of the part of an electrode between the electrode clamp and the furnace roof without removing the electrode from the roof.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 28, 1982
Date of Patent: March 20, 1984
    Assignee: Foseco Trading A.G.
Inventors: Dietger Dunkelmann, Helmut Jaunich, Josef Schiffarth
  • Patent number: 4435510
Abstract: Matter for protecting graphite electrodes of electric arc furnaces, e.g. for steelmaking, to reduce loss of graphite by oxidation, comprises particles containing both a graphite-wetting fusible matrix material and a refractory filler. Methods of making and using the particulate matter are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4301387
Abstract: Carbon articles, particularly carbon electrodes, are protected against corrosive attack in use by fusing material to the article, or applying material to the carbon article which under the conditions of its use is capable of fusing to the carbon article, to form a coherent coating of protective material over only that part of the carbon article liable to corrosive attack when the article is in use.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 14, 1976
Date of Patent: November 17, 1981
    Assignee: Foseco International Limited
Inventors: Josef Schiffarth, Clive G. Lorkin, Kenneth J. Fletcher
  • Patent number: 4259128
Abstract: A method of prolonging the useful life of a partially consumed electric arc furnace electrode which comprises holding the electrode in a fixed position, moving a plurality of electrode protection sheets substantially radially of the major axis of the electrode towards the electrode and pressing the sheets into contact with the electrode for a sufficient time to adhere the sheets to the surface of the electrode.A frame adapted to receive at least a portion of the electrode, a plurality of carriages each reciprocable in a direction radial of the major axis of the electrode, when located in the frame, each carriage being adapted to support a protective sheet, means to urge each carriage towards the electrode, and a plurality of rollers mounted on the frame each rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the plane including the centers of the rollers and the longitudinal axis of the electrode, and each roller being biased toward the electrode.

    Filed: August 17, 1977
Date of Patent: March 31, 1981
Inventors: Helmut Jaunich, Dieter Dunkelmann, Josef Schiffarth
  • Patent number: 4121955
Abstract: A method of treating an electrode used in an electric arc furnace at a steel plant, which comprises locating the electrode to be treated in a holder therefor by bringing the electrode to the holder using the main crane at the steel plant, bringing to the electrode in the holder a crane of a relatively low lifting capacity and either(i) an applicator for applying a coating of a set of preformed tiles to the electrode, or(ii) securing means and a fresh length of electrode to be secured on top of the electrode in the holder,Respectively causing the applicator to apply the coating or the securing means to secure the fresh length to the electrode while holding the electrode or fresh length of electrode respectively in the crane of relatively low lifting capacity, and removing from the area of the holder the crane and the applicator or the securing means respectively.
