  • Patent number: 5759824
Abstract: An isolated DNA fragment including the genes bcoC, bcoA/B, bcoD coding for the enzymes for L-carnitine biosynthesis in .gamma.-butyrobetaine/crotonobetaine metabolism and, additionally, including the gene bcoT coding for a potential transport protein in .gamma.-butyrobetaine/crotonobetaine metabolism. Also, any vector which includes an isolated DNA fragment including the genes bcoC, bcoA/B, bcoD coding for the enzymes for L-carnitine biosynthesis in .gamma.-butyrobetaine/crotonobetaine metabolism and, additionally, including the gene bcoT coding for a potential transport protein in .gamma.-butyrobetaine/crotonobetaine metabolism. Also, biotechnological process for the production of L-carnitine characterized in that crotonobetaine and/or .gamma.-butyrobetaine is fermented in the presence of a suitable carbon and nitrogen source using a microorgansim and L-carnitine is isolated.
