  • Patent number: 7374622
Abstract: The invention comprises a structural member formed from iron alloyed with 0.15% to 0.20% carbon, 1.00% to 1.80% manganese, 1.00% to 1.60% silicon, 1.50% to 2.50% chromium, 2.50% to 3.50% nickel, 0.40% to 0.70% molybdenum and 0.0025% to 0.0005% boron, all by weight. Preferably, alloy is subjected to a two-level thermal processing to confer a bainitic structure to the steel. Also preferably, the structural member is a frog for a railway track switch.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 21, 2005
Date of Patent: May 20, 2008

  • Patent number: 4149823
Abstract: A method of operating a machine which incorporates a rotor component and a stator component between which there exists a clearance space, wherein the clearance space is at least partially filled with at least one abradable element. The abradable element is formed of a material which grows continuously with regard to its dimensions under the operational conditions of the machine. The rate of such dimensional growth is adjusted such that there is established at least repeated contact between the abradable element and an oppositely located surface to bring about repeated abrasion of the abradable element in order to maintain the operating clearance at a size promoting efficient operation of the machine.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 27, 1978
Date of Patent: April 17, 1979
Assignee: BBC Brown, Boveri & Company Limited
    Inventor: Josef Zboril
  • Patent number: 4147466
Abstract: Between the rotor and stator components of turbo-machines, compressors, pressure wave machines and the like, the clearance space is partially filled out by an abradable element which is capable of "growing" when subjected to an elevated temperature and/or to the influence of the particular atmosphere in which the machine operates. As the element grows, it compensates for corrosion and erosion factors which take place in the machine and which otherwise tend to increase the clearance. Suitable materials which will "grow" under these operating conditions are gray cast iron and a sintered graphite-metal.

  • Patent number: 3966511
Abstract: A method for reducing abrasion between interacting moving parts which comprises applying an anti-abradant element between said moving parts which anti-bradant element will increase in dimensional proportions upon exposure to oxidation, sulphation, nitration, carbonation and/or heat annealing whereby as the anti-abradant element is abraded, said dimensional proportions are increased whereby the spacing between said moving parts is maintained relatively constant.
