  • Patent number: 4746714
Abstract: Stabilized acrylic resin having a core of acrylic polymer and a substantially linear stabilizer having one polymerizable functional group at one end of the stabilizer molecule, the resins being useful as rheology control agents for coating compositions.

  • Patent number: 4591533
Abstract: A coating composition that is used primarily as a clear finish over a colored or pigmented finish that are applied to automobile and truck bodies; the composition contains as the film forming binder(a) an acrylic polymer(b) a self stabilized dispersed resin formed by polymerizing in solution the following constituents:(1) an acrylic solution polymer,(2) monomers of alkyl methacrylate or acrylate and hydroxy ethyl acrylate or methacrylate, wherein either the acrylic solution polymer contains post reacted glycidyl methacrylate or acrylate or the monomers contain glycidyl methacrylate or acrylate, and(c) an alkylated melamine formaldehyde crosslinking agent.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 3, 1985
Date of Patent: May 27, 1986
Assignee: E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company
Inventors: Joseph A. Antonelli, Isidor Hazan
  • Patent number: 4477534
Abstract: Air-drying resins such as acrylate- or methacrylate-acid drying-oil resins and alkyds can be blended with up to 70% by weight of the combined weights of a vinyl oxazoline ester as a reactive diluent. In an organic solvent, the blend produces a suspension or solution which has a lower viscosity than a suspension or solution of resin alone but with the same percentage of solids. When applied to a substrate, the blend dries in air to a good protective and ornamental coating. The oxazoline ester can be combined with up to about twice its weight of certain melamine condensates.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 18, 1982
Date of Patent: October 16, 1984

  • Patent number: 4424296
Abstract: Blends of low molecular weight hydroxy-terminated polyesters, based on diols, such as 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentane diol, and diacids or their esters, such as isophthalic acid, and methyl esters of short chain aliphatic diacids, are provided. The blends can be crosslinked with conventional crosslinking agents such as nitrogen resins or polyisocyanates. The formulated coatings have high solids content of relatively low viscosities and are useful on e.g. metallic substrates forming, upon curing, coatings having excellent tensile strength, hardness, and resistance to staining, weathering, and corrosive conditions.

  • Patent number: 4242243
Abstract: A high solids coating composition that dries rapidly to a tack-free finish and cures under ambient temperature conditions to a durable finish useful for metals, plastics, wood, fiberglass reinforced plastics; the coating composition is used as a finish for automobiles, trucks, trailers, tractors, appliances and airplanes and also used to refinish automobiles and trucks; the film forming polymer of the coating composition has a backbone of polymerized monomers of an alkyl methacrylate such as methyl methacrylate or styrene, an alkyl acrylate and hydroxyl containing monomers such as a hydroxy alkyl acrylate or a hydroxy alkyl methacrylate and has attached thereto pendant drying oil fatty acid groups to provide the composition with ambient curing characteristics; wherein these drying oil fatty acid groups are attached by a reaction of the carboxyl group of the drying oil fatty acid and pendant hydroxyl group of the polymer backbone.

  • Patent number: 4238387
Abstract: An Additive for solvent or water based coating compositions which controls the sag of finishes of such compositions; wherein the additive comprises(a) a finely divided silica,(b) a polyfunctional acid or an acid anhydride and(c) an amine.High polymer solids water or solvent based coating compositions containing such an additive are useful for coating metal substrates such as those used in appliances, automobiles and trucks.
