  • Patent number: 5383958
Abstract: A water deaeration system has a pump in a supply pipe supplying water to a deaeration vessel. A recirculation pipe interconnecting a heat exchanger between the discharge side and the suction side of the supply pump heats a recirculated portion of the water flowing to the deaeration vessel. A vacuum pump having its suction side connected with the deaeration vessel and its discharge side connected to an air-water separator evacuates the air dissolved in the water and the separator then separates seal water and entrained water from the evacuated air. The vacuum pump has a water seal which is supplied by the separated water in the separator by a seal water pipe connected between the separator and the water seal via the hot side of the recirculation seal water heat exchanger. Heat energy introduced into the seal water by the vacuum pump is transferred to the supply water flowing to the deaeration vessel to be deaerated in order to more efficiently strip the air.

  • Patent number: 5291530
Abstract: A nuclear reactor plant is provided in which the reactor coolant system contains a dissolved solution of enriched boric acid. The boron-10 to boron-11 atomic isotope ratio of the enriched boric acid solution is greater than 19.8:80.2 at the start of the reactor core cycle. The nuclear reactor plant design provides for minimal mixing between the reactor coolant solution containing the enriched boric acid solution and the natural boric acid solution used during refueling operations.

  • Patent number: 5271052
Abstract: A nuclear reactor plant is provided in which the reactor coolant system contains a dissolved solution of enriched boric acid. The boron-10 to boron-11 atomic isotope ratio of the enriched boric acid solution is greater than 30:70 at the start of the reactor core cycle. The nuclear reactor plant design provides for minimal mixing between the reactor coolant solution containing the enriched boric acid solution and the natural boric acid solution used during refueling operations.

  • Patent number: 5265135
Abstract: An apparatus for providing an inventory of an isotopically enriched acidic solution of an element that is capable of forming a water soluble weakly acidic solution at temperatures amenable to ion exchange and having a lower molecular weight isotope fraction and a higher molecular weight isotope fraction is disclosed. This apparatus includes at least two ion exchangers, each being temperature dependent with respect to their storage capacity of said lower and higher molecular weight isotopes, a hot tank containing a hot tank solution and a cold tank containing a cold tank solution both flow coupled to the ion exchangers. A first series of valves is selectively operable to direct the hot tank solution to one of the ion exchanger and to direct the cold tank solution to the other ion exchangers. A second series of valves is selectively operable to direct the flow from the ion exchangers to either the hot tank or the cold tank. An analyzer for sampling the solution is located upstream from the hot tank.

  • Patent number: 5176885
Abstract: A process and an apparatus are provided which separate the lower molecular weight isotope fraction from the higher molecular weight isotope fraction of an element which forms a water soluble acid at temperatures amenable to ion exchange. The separation is accomplished by shifting the equilibrium constants for absorption and desorption by temperature variations of the acidic solution. The process and apparatus are preferably employed to enrich a boric acid solution in its boron-10 isotope fraction by employing the use of ion exchange resins which are capable of thermally storing and releasing boron isotopes.

  • Patent number: 5090221
Abstract: Both an apparatus and method for water washing garments in order to remove particulate radioactive contaminants therefrom is disclosed herein. The apparatus generally comprises a washing machine having a wash-water inlet, a rinse-water inlet, a circulation inlet, a water outlet and a particulate removal system connected between the circulation inlet and the water outlet of the washing machine for circulating water introduced into the washing machine between two and three times through a filtration bank while the machine washes or rinses the garments. The apparatus also includes a hydraulically closed wash-water system having a polished wash-water reservoir connected to the wash-water inlet of the washing machine, as well as a hydraulically closed rinse-water system having a polished rinse-water reservoir connected to the rinse-water inlet of the machine. Both the wash-water system and the rinse-water system also have water polishers for removing dissolved radionucleides from the clothing.

  • Patent number: 4647425
Abstract: A procedure for vacuum degassing of a reactor coolant system which basically utilizes existing equipment to degas and refill the coolant system. The level of radiogas and non-radiogas concentration is reduced to low residual levels in less than two hours to expedite shutdown operations. The procedure enhances residual heat removal by using the steam generators as reflux condensers. During draindown of the reactor coolant to the midplane of the reactor vessel outlet nozzles, a two-phase pump is used and a vacuum is established in the vapor space created in the reactor pressure vessel, and the steam generators.
