Publication number: 20070197992Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to an absorbent article (e.g., a diaper or training pant) having a backsheet, an absorbent core and a topsheet provided with at least one opening adapted to receive fecal material. The article also includes a genital coversheet with one or more central longitudinal (partial) folds or fixed folds, which in use forms a pocket to cover the genitals, and which is positioned in, under or above part of the opening, such that a void space can be created between the genital coversheet and the absorbent core and such that a void space is present between the topsheet and the absorbent core. The present disclosure also relates to process for making pocket-shape genital coversheets for absorbent articles of the invention.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 1, 2007Publication date: August 23, 2007Applicant: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventors: Cornelia Martynus, Maja Wciorka, Ralf Geilich, Joseph Eckstein, David Dahlinger, Thomas Frisch

Publication number: 20070039690Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming an absorbent core assembly containing a batt of particulate material which may be used in an absorbent article. The apparatus may include a laydown drum having a plurality of vacuum zones, a plurality of fence zones, and a plurality of blow-off zones. The vacuum zones may be substantially permeable to permit air to pass through and into the laydown drum. The fence zones may be substantially impermeable to inhibit air from passing through. The blow-off zones may be substantially permeable to permit air to pass out of and through said laydown drum. The apparatus may also include a deposition chute for depositing particulate material on a web of material in close proximity to the laydown drum. A shield may also be attached to the deposition chute in order to prevent the particles from bouncing off of the laydown drum.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 17, 2005Publication date: February 22, 2007Inventors: Bradley Walsh, Horst Blessing, Darrell Brown, John Burns, Joseph Eckstein, Volker Maier

Patent number: 6763749Abstract: A web speed metering device to which a moving web is fed at a constant web infeed speed and from which the web periodically exits at a different speed that is correlated with the timing of a downstream operation performed on the moving web. The metering device is a rotatable member that is non-axisymmetric and that has a cross-sectional shape having a centroid that is offset from the axis of rotation of the rotatable member to change the web output speed as the web exits from the metering device. The metering device allows a web to be fed to a downstream cutting device and enables the web output speed to be regulated so that the web as it leaves the metering device can be cut transversely by a non-instantaneous cut that takes place over a predetermined machine-direction distance, such as a chevron-shaped cut.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 2002Date of Patent: July 20, 2004Assignee: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventors: John F. Droste, Joseph A. Eckstein

Patent number: 6634269Abstract: Apparatus and a method for providing cut pieces from a first moving web and associating the cut pieces with a second, faster-moving carrier web. A vacuum roll is provided and cooperates with an adjacent cutter roll to enable transverse cuts to be made in the first web material. A vacuum manifold is provided and contacts the end wall surface of the vacuum roll to provide vacuum to apertures provided in the outer periphery of the vacuum roll. The vacuum roll and the vacuum manifold have spiral-like ports and slots to provide communication between a source of vacuum and the periphery of the vacuum roll at predetermined points in the path of rotation of the vacuum roll.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2001Date of Patent: October 21, 2003Assignee: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventors: Joseph A. Eckstein, John F. Droste

Patent number: 5705013Abstract: A zero scrap method for manufacturing side panels for use with absorbent articles including the following steps. First, a web of material having predetermined portions is provided in a machine direction. The predetermined portions are then activated to provide stretch in the side panels. The web is then cut continuously severing the web into a first panel and a second panel, each of the panels having alternating, nested inwardly extending elements defined by the cut and terminating at a distal edge. The inwardly extending elements are offset with respect to each other in the machine direction. The first and second panels are separated and positioned such that the inwardly extending elements of the first panel and the inwardly extending elements of the second panel are aligned in the machine direction. The distal edge of the inwardly extending elements of at least a portion of the first panel is then joined with at least a portion of the distal edge of the inwardly extending elements of the second panel.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1996Date of Patent: January 6, 1998Assignee: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventors: Michael G. Nease, Bradley E. Walsh, Robert E. Askin, Joseph A. Eckstein
