  • Patent number: 7672265
Abstract: A physical automatic repeat request method implemented by a base station having a transmitter and a receiver. A physical layer, at the transmitter receives data and formats the received data into packets having a particular encoding/data modulation. The physical layer transmit the packets and retransmits packets upon failure to receive a corresponding acknowledgment for a given packet. An adaptive modulation and coding controller in the transmitter collects retransmission statistics and adjusts the particular encoding/data modulations using the collected statistics.

  • Patent number: 7668132
Abstract: A received channel power indicator (RCPI) value is used as a measure of the received RF power in the selected channel, measured at the antenna connector. This parameter is a measure by the PHY sublayer of the received RF power in the channel measured over the PLCP preamble and over the entire received frame. RCPI is a monotonically increasing, logarithmic function of the received power level defined in dBm.

  • Publication number: 20080176519
Abstract: Metrics for estimating RF interference may be derived from measurements of idle channel noise, channel utilization, medium access delay, STA throughput, BSS throughput, and frame error rate. Further, metrics may be derived from the prior list of directly measured items in combination, as ratios and by rate of change analysis. RF interference is measured indirectly by measuring total idle channel power or by measuring changes in communication channel efficiency and frame errors.

  • Publication number: 20080123588
Abstract: A wireless communication method and apparatus for providing network advice to wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) are disclosed. Once start-up of a WTRU is initiated, the WTRU scans a network advice channel in a particular band, (e.g., 5.180 GHz-5.320 GHz). If a network advice frame is detected, the WTRU tunes to a channel indicated by the network advice frame and associates with a basic service set (BSS) operating on the channel indicated by the network advice frame. Otherwise, the WTRU scans another available network advice channel in the band.

  • Publication number: 20060253735
Abstract: A method and system for conserving power of battery-powered mesh points (MPs) in a mesh network are disclosed. In one embodiment, a centralized controller is provided in the mesh network. Each of the MPs signal information associated with conserving MP battery power and provide indications of battery power levels associated with the respective MPs to the centralized controller. The centralized controller optimizes the configuration of the mesh network based on the signaling information for conserving MP battery power and the battery power level indications. In an alternate embodiment, each of the MPs individually monitor traffic flowing through the respective MP and a level of battery power associated with the respective MP. Each of the MPs determine whether to activate a power saving function associated with the respective MP and signal information associated with conserving MP battery power to neighboring MPs in the mesh network.

  • Publication number: 20060030290
Abstract: A device for identifying an emergency call in a wireless local area network includes an indicator to identify a call as an emergency call. The indicator can be a bit flag or an information element. The information element can include location information regarding the location of the station that placed the emergency call. This information can be used to located the caller. The location information can be transmitted from the station to an access point separately from an emergency call.

  • Publication number: 20050157676
Abstract: An improved method of network management, particularly in the context of standards IEEE802.11 and IEEE802.11k, through two new MAC measurements, with attendant advantages. The two new measurements include WTRU uplink traffic loading measurement, and an AP service loading measurement and is generally applicable at least to layers 1 and 2 as applied to a least 802.11k in the context of OFDM and CDMA 2000 systems, but is applicable to other scenarios as well. A Method for determining and advertising congestion is also provided for a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) system. The present invention also introduces a method for managing congestion when congestion is detected. This aspect of the present invention applies primarily to wireless systems that use the Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism. The methods are advantageously implemented in selectively configured WTRUs of various forms.

  • Publication number: 20050111403
Abstract: A method and wireless communication system for transferring management information. The system includes at least one access point (AP) including a first management entity and a second management entity, and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) including a third management entity and a fourth management entity. The AP transmits a management information base (MIB) information request action frame including a category field and an action details field to the WTRU. In response to receiving the information request action frame, the WTRU determines whether or not to provide management information to the AP. When the WTRU provides management information to the AP, the WTRU compiles management information stored in a MIB located in the WTRU and transmits a MIB information report action frame to the AP. The MIB lists a plurality of tables containing information associated with radio resource management (RRM) and at least one table containing physical layer measurements.

  • Publication number: 20050009565
Abstract: A beacon signal used in data communications, such as the IEEE 802.11, is provided with data extensions. The data extensions permit additional information to be provided by the beacon signal, thereby reducing the traffic overhead of the network. The data extensions further permit handoffs and handoffs based on offset values. Periodic beacon requests are made during connection between a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and an access point (AP) on a WLAN. A Measurement Request field corresponding to a beacon request contains a measurement duration value and channel number for which the request applies. The beacon request permits a scan mode which includes “Active Scan” mode, “Passive Scan” mode and “Beacon Table” mode. In Active Scan mode, the measuring station (STA) transmits a probe request with a broadcast SSID.
