  • Publication number: 20090320277
Abstract: A means and method for rendering high energy density cells safe in compliance with transportation requirements, with the incorporation of a cell fusible terminal which is added on or incorporated within the cell terminals to prevent over current and hazards from developing due to external short circuits. As a result, cells made in accordance with the method of the present invention can be shipped by common carriers even though they are classified as hazardous materials and can be readily used and normally discharged with such fusible link element thereon. The fusible terminal comprises a non conductive base element upon which is mounted a fusible link element and wherein the non-conductive or insulative base element comprises means for connection to a terminal of the cell or battery and to an external component.

  • Publication number: 20080268333
Abstract: An electrochemical battery having at least one self contained thermoelectric cooling device such as a Peltier device, for cooling the battery to optimal operating conditions. The thermoelectric cooling device is contained within a housing of the battery and is in proximity to cells contained within the housing with the cooling device being electrically connected to the cells of the battery and an external electrical power source. A switching element is configured to selectively power the thermoelectric cooling device from the external electrical power source and with shut down of the external electrical power the switching element redirects power from the battery to the thermoelectric cooling device to effect continued cooling of the battery.

  • Publication number: 20080070101
Abstract: A method for filling foil container electrochemical cells with fluid electrolyte and an integral structure for such foil container cells which permits such method. In accordance with the present invention, a fill port or fill header member is integrated with a fluid tight seal with a peripheral seal of the cell container and remains as a part of the cell. The fill port comprises a member for the fluid introduction therethrough of fluid electrolyte to the cells and the fluid tight sealing thereof thereafter.

  • Publication number: 20080070099
Abstract: A primary electrochemical cell having a capacity in excess of 0.5 AHr and a high energy density anode comprised of a metal selected from lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium and manganese and a cathode active material, wherein the discharge capacity of the anode is at least substantially equal to or in excess of the discharge capacity of the cathode active material, and wherein said cell further comprises a voltage monitor and cell circuit cut-off whereby when the voltage monitor senses a discharge voltage of about 1.6 or lower, said circuit cut-off are actuated to cut off the cell circuit to thereby prevent hazardous conditions of cell reversal or anode metal plating.

  • Publication number: 20070096694
Abstract: A method and device for the remote interrogation of batteries and individual cells and remote determination of state of charge of such cells and batteries. The device comprises a capacity measurement element (or alternatively a voltage determiner with correlation to capacity) as commonly used with such cells or batteries, with an electronic analog or digital output. The measurement element is linked to a transmitter element such as radio frequency (RF), bluetooth and infra red (IR) transmission elements (if the containing device is permeable by IR) or other similar electronic remote transmission means. Individual cell identification circuitry correlates the transmission to a particular battery. The device further comprises a receiver which triggers the transmission and which remotely displays the state of charge information.

  • Publication number: 20070099034
Abstract: An electrochemical cell comprising a method and device for the immediate substantial shutdown of electrochemical function under increasing heat build-up therein, said means comprising a thin layer of a PTC (positive temperature coefficient) material substantially completely coated on an electrode surface to substantially and immediately disrupt cell function with concomitant cessation of heat generation at a transition temperature of the PTC material.
