Patent number: 9279778Abstract: Certain disclosed embodiments concern a method and an apparatus for determining molecular structure. One embodiment comprises producing sample ions from a sample, cooling molecules of the sample ions by either embedding sample ions in superfluid droplets, such as superfluidic helium droplets, or subjecting sample ions in a cooled ion trap, to a selected temperature approaching absolute zero. Plural cooled sample ions confined in a diffraction zone are oriented using a laser, and a diffraction image is produced from oriented sample ions using an electron beam. Molecular structure is determined using collected images from different orientations obtained under different polarization directions of the orientation laser. Embodiments of an apparatus for determining molecular structure also are disclosed. The apparatus operation, data accumulation and processing are controlled by software.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2015Date of Patent: March 8, 2016Assignee: Oregon State UniversityInventors: Joseph Beckman, Wei Kong, Valery G. Voinov, William M. Freund

Publication number: 20060275290Abstract: The present invention relates to novel methods for combating cell degeneration or dysfunction resulting from neuroinflammatory conditions. The invention especially relates to the use, in the preparation of a medicament for the treatment of neurodegenerative disease associated with neuroinflammation, of an immunogenic compound which is capable of inducing an immune response against a proapoptotic neurotrophin, or an effective amount of a hapten combined with appropriate carriers and/or adjuvants to render the resulting combination capable of inducing an immune response against a proapoptotic neurotrophin. Also disclosed are compositions for the active or passive immunization against neuronal or glial cell apoptosis caused by neuroinflammation as well as methods and means useful for said active or passive immunization.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 24, 2006Publication date: December 7, 2006Applicants: INSTITUT PASTEUR, INSTITUTO DE INVEST.
