  • Patent number: 4874673
Abstract: Autodepositing compositions of the type that form coatings which tend to crack in the wet stage are modified by including in the composition a fugitive plasticizer, such as 2,2,4-trimethylpentanediol-1,3 monoisobutyrate, tributoxyethyl phosphate, ethylene glycol monohexyl ether, diethylene glycol monohexyl ether, or a mixture of phenyl glycol ethers.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 19, 1987
Date of Patent: October 17, 1989
    Assignee: Henkel Corporation
Inventors: Joseph C. Donovan, Bashir M. Ahmed
  • Patent number: 4636265
Abstract: A method of improving the anticorrosion properties of an autodeposited resin coating by including in the post-bath rinse (a) a metal dichromate, (b) a metal hypophosphite, or (c) a combination of either of the foregoing with a metal hydrogenphosphate, followed by curing.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 26, 1985
Date of Patent: January 13, 1987
    Assignee: Henkel Kommanditgesellschaft auf Aktien
Inventors: Herbert Fischer, Karl H. Stritzke, Roland Morlock, Thomas C. Jones, Joseph C. Donovan
  • Patent number: 4357372
Abstract: An outodepositing coating process wherein a coating bath containing an acidic aqueous coating composition comprising as essential ingredients: (1) an acid; (2) an oxidizing agent; and (3) an aqueous dispersion of coating forming resin particles and surfactant, which surfactant is subject to being slowly altered by the acidic oxidizing environment in the metal coating bath resulting in the buildup of reaction products in the bath, which bath is maintained in continuous coating forming operability by replenishing in a manner which prevents the deterioration of the coating quality of the bath. The coating composition and replenishing composition may also contain as an optional ingredient an aqueous dispersion of pigment and surfactant and may also contain non-essential ingredients, which non-essential ingredients may increase in concentration as the bath is operated until a deleterious effect is asserted on the coating formation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 20, 1980
Date of Patent: November 2, 1982
    Assignee: Amchem Products, Inc.
Inventors: Harry M. Leister, Joseph C. Donovan, Wilbur S. Hall
