  • Publication number: 20040199180
Abstract: A device having a cutting implement movable in a direction generally parallel to a tissue surface and creating a cut line that does not extend to the proximal end of tissue adjacent the device is disclosed. The device has a cutting implement that emerges from a tissue engaging surface and cuts tissue only between a proximal and distal ends of the adjoining staple lines. A method is further provided for anastomosing two lumens without extending the passageway between them to the openings made for the forks of the anastomosis device.

  • Patent number: 5878938
Abstract: A surgical stapler for effecting simultaneous cutting and stapling of tissue includes a frame and a staple cartridge positionable in the frame. The stapler includes a knife blade mounted for movement distally of the staple cartridge, the knife blade having a retraction lock feature including a locking portion for abutment to a roof member of a spacer carried on the frame in a locked position, to prevent movement of the knife blade, unless the stapler is fitted with a fresh, unused staple cartridge. The locking portion is spring loaded by a leaf spring into the locked position. The knife blade includes a spring notch which coacts with the leaf spring to mechanically lift and pivotally thrust the knife blade to the locked position when the knife blade is retracted after use. The lift or thrust feature clears out tissue accumulation which enhances the ability of the knife to restore to its full elevated return position.

  • Patent number: 5605272
Abstract: A linear surgical stapler having clamping and firing triggers pivotally mounted to the frame of the instrument for pivotal rotation toward a hand grip is disclosed. The clamping trigger is positioned between the firing trigger and the hand grip. Each of the triggers are pivotally mounted to pivot pins spaced from each other within the body portion of the frame. Pivotal rotation of the first trigger is independent of pivotal rotation of the second trigger. When the clamping trigger is pivotally rotated toward the hand grip, the clamping and firing transmission assemblies move distally in tandem. Before the first trigger is pivoted, the firing transmission assembly blocks pivotal rotation of the second trigger. When the first trigger is pivoted, the initial distal movement of the firing transmission assembly enables the firing trigger to be in a position to pivotally rotate, and therefore cause the firing of staples.

  • Patent number: 5452836
Abstract: An improved surgical stapling instrument is provided for applying surgical staples to human tissue. The instrument has an articulated stapling head assembly mounted by a rotatable and flexible support shaft on an actuator handle assembly with an improved actuator mechanism for closing and firing the stapling head assembly. The stapling head assembly comprises a fixed jaw with a staple cartridge and a movable jaw with an anvil for clamping the tissue therebetween. The actuator mechanism comprises a jaw closure lever for closing the jaws and a staple firing lever for actuating a staple driver to drive the staples from the staple cartridge into the tissue and against the anvil. The actuator mechanism also includes a cam pulley mounted for rotation by the staple firing lever and secured to a firing cable for actuating the staple driver.
