  • Publication number: 20050053005
Abstract: A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) may include a plurality of mobile nodes each including a wireless communications device and a controller connected thereto. At an upper protocol layer, the controller may establish a quality-of-service (QoS) threshold. At at least one intermediate protocol layer, the controller may select at least one route for transmitting data to at least one destination mobile node based upon the QoS threshold, and determine whether a QoS metric for the selected route falls below the threshold. At a lower protocol layer, the controller may cooperate with the wireless communications device to transmit data to the at least one destination mobile node via the at least one selected route, and cooperate with the wireless communications device at the lower protocol layer to adjust signal transmission power, pattern, and/or gain based upon a determination that the QoS metric has fallen below the QoS threshold.

  • Publication number: 20050054346
Abstract: The method routes message data from a source node to a destination node in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET). The MANET has a plurality of intermediate mobile nodes between the source node and the destination node, and a plurality of wireless communication links connecting the nodes together. The method includes prioritizing the message data according to a type-of-service (ToS), discovering routes from the source node to the destination node, and ranking the discovered routes according to quality of service (QoS). Message data is distributed to the destination node on the discovered routes based upon the ToS of the message data and the QoS of the discovered routes, including distributing message data having a same ToS on multiple discovered routes, and distributing message data having higher priority ToS, e.g. delay sensitive message data and/or large volume message data, on higher ranked discovered routes.

  • Publication number: 20050053003
Abstract: A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) may include a plurality of mobile nodes each including a wireless communications device and a controller connected thereto operating in accordance with a multi-layer protocol hierarchy. More particularly, the controller may, at an application layer, establish a quality-of-service (QoS) threshold, and at a QoS support layer below the application layer, determine whether to require data reception acknowledgements based upon the QoS threshold. At a QoS coding layer below the QoS support layer, data from the application layer may be encoded for transmission to a destination mobile node(s). Additionally, at a QoS route selection layer below the QoS coding layer, at least one route to the destination mobile node(s) may be selected based upon the QoS threshold. At a QoS traffic layer below the QoS route selection layer, data traffic flow may be controlled based upon the QoS threshold.

More particularly, the controller may, at an upper protocol layer, establish a quality-of-service (QoS) threshold. Further, at at least one intermediate protocol layer below the upper protocol layer, the controller may determine whether a QoS metric for at least one selected route from at least one source mobile node falls below the QoS threshold. In addition, at a lower protocol layer below the at least one intermediate protocol layer, the controller may cooperate with the wireless communications device to determine the QoS metric for the at least one selected route, and adjust signal reception gain and/or a signal reception pattern based upon a determination that the QoS metric has fallen below the QoS threshold.

The controller may operate in accordance with a multi-layer protocol hierarchy. More particularly, at an upper protocol layer, the controller may establish a quality-of-service (QoS) threshold. Furthermore, at at least one intermediate protocol layer below the upper protocol layer, the controller may select between unicast and multicast communications modes based upon the QoS threshold. As such, at a lower protocol layer below the at least one intermediate protocol layer, the controller may cooperate with the wireless communications device to transmit data to at least one destination mobile node based upon the selected communications mode.

  • Publication number: 20050053007
Abstract: Message data is routed from a source node to a destination node in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) having a plurality of intermediate mobile nodes between a source node and a destination node, and a plurality of wireless communication links connecting the nodes together. Traffic state information is obtained about the intermediate nodes between the source node and the destination node. The traffic state information includes node resource utilization information, node residual capacity information, and node transit delay information. Candidate routes are discovered from the source node to the destination node, and one or more routes are selected from among the candidate routes to distribute message data to the destination node based upon the number of intermediate nodes and the traffic state information obtained for each of the intermediate nodes on the discovered route.
