  • Patent number: 6884436
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for preparing a suspension of a pharmaceutically-active compound, the solubility of which is greater in a water-miscible first organic solvent than in a second solvent which is aqueous. The process includes the steps of: (i) dissolving a first quantity of the pharmaceutically-active compound in the water-miscible first organic solvent to form a first solution; (ii) mixing the first solution with the second solvent to precipitate the pharmaceutically-active compound; and (iii) seeding the first solution or the second solvent or the pre-suspension.

  • Publication number: 20050048126
Abstract: The present invention relates to compositions of submicron- to micron-size particles of antimicrobial agents. More particularly the invention relates to a composition of an antimicrobial agent that renders the agent potent against organisms normally considered to be resistant to the agent. The composition comprises an aqueous suspension of submicron- to micron-size particles containing the agent coated with at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of: ionic surfactants, non-ionic surfactants, biologically derived surfactants, and amino acids and their derivatives. The particles have a volume-weighted mean particle size of less than 5 ?m as measured by laser diffractometry.

  • Publication number: 20040266890
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for comminuting and stabilizing small particles are provided. In one embodiment, an apparatus moves an organic compound dissolved in a solvent to form a suspension of particles in a first fluid stream and moves the suspension in a second fluid stream, wherein the second fluid stream is oriented and positioned with respect to the first stream to cause shearing between the streams and mixing of at least some of the particles in the first and second streams.

  • Publication number: 20040206890
Abstract: The present invention provides for measuring a particle size distribution of a population of particles using a light scattering particle sizing instrument having a plurality of selectable imaginary component values of the refractive index. The particles each having a particle size and the process includes the steps of: (i) providing a population of the particles, wherein the particles have a refractive index; (ii) determining a real component of the refractive index of the particles using the Becke Line Method; (iii) determining an imaginary component of the refractive index of the particles; and (iv) determining the particle size distribution of the particles by the light scattering particle sizing instrument wherein the particle size distribution is determined using the real component of the refractive index measured in step (ii) and the imaginary component of the refractive index determined in step (iii).

  • Publication number: 20040022862
Abstract: The present invention is concerned with the formation of small particles of organic compounds by precipitating the organic compounds in an aqueous medium to form a pre-suspension followed by adding energy to stabilize a coating of the particle or to alter the lattice structure of the particle. The process includes the steps of: (i) dissolving the organic compound in the water-miscible first solvent to form a solution; (ii) mixing the solution with the second solvent to define a presuspension of particles; and (iii) adding energy to the presuspension to form a suspension of particles having an average effective particle size of less than about 100 &mgr;m. The process is preferably used to prepare a suspension of small particles of a poorly water-soluble, pharmaceutically active compound suitable for in vivo delivery by an administrate route such as parenteral, oral, pulmonary, nasal, buccal, topical ophthalmic, rectal, vaginal, transdermal or the like.

  • Patent number: 6443340
Abstract: A cellular telephone holster includes a holster section formed to accept a cellular telephone. A clip portion is rotatably attached to the holster section and formed to have a circular opening with at least one detent along an inner perimeter of the opening. A spring system is coupled to the holster section and includes a substantially incompressible piston and a compressible material separate from and coupled to the substantially incompressible piston. The circular opening is sized to fit around the spring system. The holster section is formed to have at least one protrusion, and the substantially incompressible piston and the compressible material are insertable against the protrusion, whereby the at least one protrusion contributes to holding the substantially incompressible piston and the compressible material in place relative to the holster section.

  • Patent number: 5650583
Abstract: A pattern memory stores plural accompaniment patterns for each of plural accompaniment components. Each of the accompaniment components is composed of one or more musical instrument parts for an accompaniment performance. There are provided operating members which are used for selectively designating a desired component and a touch sensor for detecting an operation touch applied to the operated operating member. Any of the plural accompaniment patterns corresponding to the designated component is selected in accordance with the detected operation touch, and the selected accompaniment pattern is read out from the memory. The entire accompaniment performance pattern is provided by a combination of the accompaniment patterns thus selected for the respective components. In order to allow the selected pattern to be changed freely, modifiers representing how to make the change may be utilized by the user.
