  • Patent number: 8092451
Abstract: A bipolar electrosurgical instrument has a pair of pivotable juxtaposed jaw members and a locking mechanism operatively associated with a second of the jaw members. The locking mechanism has a first position engaged with the second jaw member for preventing movement of the second jaw member between an axially aligned orientation and at least one angled orientation, and a second position. The second position is disengaged from the second jaw member allowing for movement of the second jaw member between the axially aligned orientation and the at least one angled orientation. The instrument has an actuation mechanism operatively connected to a first of the jaw members with the actuation mechanism operable to move the first jaw member between an axially aligned first orientation and at least one angled orientation. An articulation knob is operatively associated with the locking mechanism and effectuates independent operation of the locking and actuation mechanisms.

  • Publication number: 20110009864
Abstract: An endoscopic forceps includes a housing having a shaft attached thereto with a longitudinal axis defined therethrough and an end effector assembly disposed at a distal end thereof. The end effector assembly includes first and second jaw members disposed in opposing relation relative to one another and moveable from a first, open position to a second, closed position for grasping tissue therebetween. Each of the jaw members includes a proximal flange adapted to communicate with a drive assembly for moving the jaw members between the first and second positions. One or both of the of the jaw members has a curved knife channel defined therein having a proximal end that is offset from the longitudinal axis defined through the shaft. A knife guide is assembled to an outer surface of one of the proximal flanges of the jaw members on the same side as the proximal end of the knife channel and defines a knife path therein configured to guide a knife into the knife channel for translation therethrough.

  • Publication number: 20100132512
Abstract: A hand held opener for opening a frangible closer comprising a handle adapted to be gripped by an operator, a motion actuator operatively connected to the handle, a first shaft connected to the motion actuator, a second shaft connected to the motion actuator, a first gripper portion on the first shaft adapted to grip the frangible closer in a first location, and a second gripper portion on the second shaft adapted to grip the frangible closer in a second location wherein the motion actuator provides reciprocal movement to the shafts to rotate the frangible closer in one direction and to rotate the frangible closer in a direction opposite the first direction.
