    Abstract: A system and method for canceling disturbance in a MEMS device. The system 200 includes a MEMS device 203, which may include a substrate 205 and a plurality of individually movable MEMS elements 203-1 through 203-N, and a control assembly 207. The optical system 200 may be utilized in and/or form a portion of any optical apparatus employing an array of MEMS devices. The control assembly 207 uses feed-forward control signals to cancel disturbance in the MEMS device 203, and more particularly, to cancel disturbance in the non-switched or static mirrors of the MEMS device 203 caused by switched or moving mirrors.

    Abstract: This invention provides a novel wavelength-separating-routing (WSR) apparatus that uses a diffraction grating to separate a multi-wavelength optical signal by wavelength into multiple spectral channels, which are then focused onto an array of corresponding channel micromirrors. The channel micromirrors are individually controllable and continuously pivotable to reflect the spectral channels into selected output ports. As such, the inventive WSR apparatus is capable of routing the spectral channels on a channel-by-channel basis and coupling any spectral channel into any one of the output ports. The WSR apparatus of the present invention may be further equipped with servo-control and spectral power-management capabilities, thereby maintaining the coupling efficiencies of the spectral channels into the output ports at desired values.

    Abstract: An optical head utilizes a micro-machined element in combination with a light source and a lens to write and read data onto a storage disk. The micro-machined element may include a steerable micro-machined mirror or a micro-actuator. A beam of laser light transmitted from the light source to the optical head and a reflected light from the storage disk is altered by a movement of the micro-machined element. In this manner a focused optical spot is scanned back and forth in a direction which is approximately parallel to the radial direction of the storage disk.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for fabricating a MEMS apparatus having a device layer with an optical surface that is supported by a pedestal on a planar support layer that is suspended for movement with respect to a base support by hinge elements disposed in a different plane from the planar support layer. The surface area of the optical surface is maximized with respect to the base support to optimized the fill factor of the optical surface and afford a high passband. The height of the pedestal is selected to position the device layer sufficiently above the base support to afford an unobstructed predetermined angular rotation about each axis. The hinges may be made of thin-film material, fabricated by way of surface micromachining techniques. The hinges are disposed underneath the device layer enabling the optical surface to be maximized so that the entire surface becomes usable (e.g., for optical beam manipulation). MEMS devices afford an array of MEMS mirrors with a high optical fill factor and high passband.

A beam of laser light transmitted from the light source to the optical head is reflected onto a steerable micro-machined folding mirror. The reflected light from the folding mirror is directed through an embedded micro-objective GRIN lens. Fine tracking and short seeks to adjacent tracks are performed by rotating the mirror about an axis of rotation. In this way a focus spot is scanned back and forth in a direction which is approximately parallel to the radial direction of the storage disk.

    Abstract: A slider is used in an optical or magneto-optical head having an optical assembly mounted on the slider body, for directing a read-write laser beam onto and from a data storage disk. The optical assembly includes an optical fiber a mirror a quarter wavelength plate, and a lens. The optical fiber guides the laser beam along an optical path defined by the optical assembly and the slider body. The laser beam emanating from the optical fiber impinges upon the mirror and is reflected thereby onto and through the quarter wavelength plate. The laser beam continues its travel along the optical path through the lens and a magnetic coil assembly onto the disk. The slider includes a channel pattern formed on its upper surface for positioning the optical components on the slider body. The channel pattern includes a plurality of channels that define an optical path, and a plurality of cavities formed along these channels for receiving various components such as optical, magnetic and electrical components.

    Abstract: A portable mixer for use for use with an open top mixing container for mixing concrete or the like as having a pair of inboard rotary mixing blades and a pair of outboard mixing blade assemblies mounted on a generally horizontal rotary shaft. The outboard mixing blades are made up of a central hub removably affixed to the shaft. A peripheral ring extends about the hub and is connected to by a plurality of spokes. The peripheral ring has a diameter greater than that of the intermediate blades in order to prevent the intermediate blades from engaging the mixing container. A plurality of rotary disc blades are pivotally mounted on one of the plurality of spokes. The rotary disc blades have a diameter sufficiently large to cause a portion of the rotary disc blades to extend outwardly beyond the peripheral ring in order to engage the mixing container sidewalls.

    Abstract: RF power is sampled and measured at the input and output of a solid state power amplifier using directional couplers and matched square law detectors. Outputs from the detectors are applied to differential inputs of a DC operational amplifier. Outputs from the detectors are compared and filtered in the operational amplifier and the resulting difference signal is applied to a control input on a switching type power supply. The power supply converts a DC input voltage to the various positive and negative voltages required to operate the RF devices in the solid state power amplifier. When the control loop is closed, the supply voltage varies to maintain a constant operating point resulting in constant gain, efficiency, and linearity for the overall solid state power amplifier despite variations in signal levels and signal composition. In another embodiment, the solid state power amplifier has a series of single-ended low power amplifiers terminating in an output high power module.
