  • Patent number: 4657779
Abstract: An ultraviolet-curable liquid coating composition which possesses minimal substrate deformational shrinkage on cure is disclosed in which (A) a cationically curable polyepoxide having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency of at least 1.3 is used in admixture with (B) an acrylate-functional compound which is either (1) a monoacrylate-functional compound carrying at least two primary hydroxy groups; or (2) an epoxy-functional monoacrylate in admixture with a compound carrying a plurality of primary hydroxyl groups. An acrylate-functional liquid (C), preferably a monoacrylate, is used to provide coating viscosity, and a catalyst component capable of initiating, on ultraviolet exposure, both the conventional free-radical polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and the cationic polymerization of polyepoxides in the presence of a compound carrying the primary hydroxy group.

  • Patent number: 4649045
Abstract: The present invention relates to coating compositions that include an admixture or blend of at least two solution copolymers that provide combinations of properties which are not possessed by coating compositions that include only one of the copolymers. Each solution copolymer contains at least one aromatic monoethylenic monomer and at least one monoethylenic ester in amounts sufficient to provide a first solution copolymer having a glass transition temperature between about 40 and 70 degrees Centigrade and a second solution copolymer having a glass transition temperature between about -10 and +10 degrees Centigrade. Pigments can be readily wetted and dispersed in the copolymer blend to provide stable pigment concentrates that are useful in the preparation of coating compositions suitable for use on human fingernails.

  • Patent number: 4433014
Abstract: A pigmented, thermosetting organic solvent solution coating composition having improved capacity to resist acid rain is disclosed in which a resinous polyepoxide, a phenoplast resin cross-linking agent for said polyepoxide (preferably a xylolol-formaldehyde condensate), a phosphoric acid ester catalyst, a chromium-containing pigment providing resistance to corrosion, and a clay having the capacity to fix phosphate, are combined. For package stability, the catalyst is the reaction product of ortho phosphoric acid with an aliphatic diol, there being sufficient hydroxy in said diol to provide at least 1 equivalent of hydroxy for each acid equivalent in said phosphoric acid. These coatings are applied as a prime coating which is baked to remove solvents and provide a dry film without removing the phosphoric acid contained therein. The dry primer is then overcoated with a topcoat, and the doubly coated substrate is baked to cure the first coating.

  • Patent number: 4384070
Abstract: Pigmented coating solutions are disclosed which deposit coatings possessing improved resistance to ultraviolet radiation-induced auto-oxidation. These solutions contain organic solvent, including aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, having dissolved therein an aromatic hydrocarbon-soluble, normally liquid, polysulfide or polydisulfide derivative having terminal -SH groups which have been reacted with a monofunctional reactant providing a C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl terminal group to provide an essentially nonreactive derivative. The solvent also has dissolved therein a polar polymeric binder (preferably thermosetting) which degrades by a photo-oxidative mechanism and which has only limited compatibility with the derivative. The pigment protects the bulk of a deposited coating, and the limited compatibility causes a heated film of the coating solution to stratify as the solvent evaporates to concentrate the derivative at the surface of the cured coating to protect the same.

  • Patent number: 4370441
Abstract: Pigmented thermosetting organic solvent solution coating compositions are disclosed which cure to provide improved weather resistance. These coating compositions contain three resin components, as follows:1- an essentially nonfunctional organic solvent-soluble silicone resin reaction product of a highly branched, low molecular weight hydroxy function polyester with an hydroxy or alkoxy-functional organic polysiloxane, the polysiloxane constituting from 8% to 20% of the three resin components, and the polyester and the polysiloxane being combined in approximately stoichiometric proportions;2- a reactive organic solvent-soluble essentially linear high molecular weight hydroxy functional polyester constituting the balance of the three resin components; and3- from 3% to 15% of the three resin components of a heterocyclic aminoplast resin for curing the reactive polyester.

  • Patent number: 4147253
Abstract: A supply package for wet-impregnated multifilament roving is provided in which the multifilament roving is impregnated with a curable liquid having a tack less than about 6 (measured on a Thwing-Albert inkometer) in an amount at least sufficient to fill the spaces between the filaments in the roving, but not in excess of about a 3:2 ratio of curable liquid to fiber, by volume. This impregnated roving is way wound onto a cylinder to provide a crossing angle between the rovings in adjacent layers of at least about 10.degree. to provide free volume storage capacity between the angled rovings which accepts any liquid which may run off. In this manner the wet-impregnated roving can be stored wet in the way wound cylinder and easily withdrawn therefrom when needed.

  • Patent number: 4127460
Abstract: A radiation-curable aqueous emulsion coating composition which cures to provide a nonadherent surface is provided by emulsifying droplets of liquid alkyl hydrogen polysiloxane in water, the water having dispersed therein a radiation-curable polyethylenically unsaturated tertiary amine, such as an amine polyacrylate, at least partially neutralized with a solubilizing acid. The aqueous emulsion preferably includes a photosensitizer rendering the composition curable with ultraviolet light.
