Patent number: 10518014Abstract: Embodiments include a consumable medical device comprises a rigid cartridge to which a film is adhered to form a fluid channel and a damper chamber. A portion of the film forming the damper chamber has a wave-like shape adapted to roll onto a tip of a damper. The damper has a plunger to minimize peristaltic pressure in the channel. The cartridge may include conductivity measurement channels. Crosstalk may be minimized by using different frequencies or time division for reading the channels. A stable dialysate concentrate containing sodium lactate may be used or generated with the system. The concentrate may be formed to higher concentration than feasible with a single component concentrate by forming two containers of concentrate, each containing a fraction of a total quantity of sodium lactate required for a predefined number of dialysis.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2016Date of Patent: December 31, 2019Assignee: NXSTAGE MEDICAL, INC.Inventors: Orlando Soto, Joseph Rausa, James M. Brugger, William J. Schnell, Goetz Friederichs, Jeffrey H. Burbank, Joseph E. Turk, Scott W. Newell, Amanda Wozniak

Publication number: 20190344007Abstract: A vascular access device may include a blood circuit having an arterial blood line and a venous blood line. The venous blood line is connected to a first access needle and the arterial blood line is connected to a second access needle. The venous blood line is connected to an access component affixed to the second access needle and configured such that when the second access needle is used to infuse blood into a patient, the access component is positioned to withdraw blood and convey it into the venous line. The withdrawn blood may also be conveyed to an air detector to detect withdrawal of the second access needle.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 24, 2019Publication date: November 14, 2019Applicant: NxStage Medical, Inc.Inventors: Joseph E. TURK, JR., Jeffrey H. BURBANK, James M. BRUGGER

Patent number: 10391229Abstract: The disclosed subject matter includes a structure and method for making a dual-lumen needle from single lumen needles to take advantage of the much higher economies of scale. Variations include two needles joined by a flow junction and one needle and a single cannula joined by a flow junction. In addition disclosed are methods of using a dual-lumen needle in a two needle access for blood treatment is disclosed in which at least venous flow is provided through a dual-lumen needle with arterial flow just sufficient to provide air infiltration detection in the event of withdrawal of the dual-lumen needle.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2015Date of Patent: August 27, 2019Assignee: Nxstage Medical, Inc.Inventors: Joseph E. Turk, Jr., Jeffrey H. Burbank, James M. Brugger

Publication number: 20190240387Abstract: The disclosed subject matter relates to extracorporeal blood processing or other processing of fluids. Volumetric fluid balance, a required element of many such processes, may be achieved with multiple pumps or other proportioning or balancing devices which are to some extent independent of each other. This need may arise in treatments that involve multiple fluids. Safe and secure mechanisms to ensure fluid balance in such systems are described.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2019Publication date: August 8, 2019Applicant: NxStage Medical, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey H. BURBANK, Dennis M. TREU, Daniel J. Rubery, JR., Scott W. NEWELL, James M. BRUGGER, William J. SCHNELL, William K. WEIGEL, Steven A. WHITE, Mark T. WYETH, Jerome JAMES, David DESOUZA, Joseph E. Publication number: 20190092660Abstract: A fluid purification system has cells whose purifying capability can be regenerated. Some of the cells are arranged in series to reach a high level of purification. An automatic valve network is controlled to cycle the cells in a way that levels the loads on each, thereby maximizing the service interval for replacing expired cells, enabling all of the cells to be replaced at the same time after having each contributing approximately equally to the purification load, and operated such that at any one time, at least one cell is regenerated so as to enable continuous up-time.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 27, 2018Publication date: March 28, 2019Applicant: NxStage Medical, Inc.Inventors: Joseph E. TURK, JR., William K. WEIGEL, Goetz FRIEDERICHS, Jeffery B. HOVER

Publication number: 20190054228Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are disclosed, embodiments of which provide single pass dialysis to remove water and uremic toxins is performed simultaneously with the albumin dialysis therapy by passing the albumin solution through a dialysis filter which dialyses it before the solution is returned to the cycler. In embodiments, the single pass dialysis stage is upstream of the albumin filtering stage.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 22, 2018Publication date: February 21, 2019Inventors: William K. WEIGEL, Joseph E. TURK, JR., Jan STANGE, Dennis M. TREU
