Abstract: The degradation of a hydrolyzable ester containing functional fluid is monitored by placing in the fluid a probe-containing a corrodible metal sensor and measuring by electrical means the corrosion of the sensor.

Abstract: An acid resistant phosphate ester functional fluid comprises phosphate ester basestock and an additive composition comprising: (1) N-alkyl-2-pyrrolidone, (2) epoxide, and (3) triazole. The functional fluid has utility for lubricating machinery. The additive composition may be prepared separately and used for imparting acid resistance to phosphate esters.

Abstract: Acidity of used organophosphate containing functional fluids is reduced by contact with activated alumina. The activated alumina is regenerated for reuse by a sequential leaching/heating process.

Abstract: A process is provided for removing soluble metallic salts, such as calcium, copper, zinc, magnesium, tin, iron, or mixtures thereof, from a phosphate ester functional fluid. The process comprises contacting the functional fluid with an effective amount of a chelating agent capable of precipitating at least part of the metallic salts contained therein to form a precipitate, and subsequently separating the precipitate from the functional fluid. A preferred chelating agent is ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, its alkali metal, alkaline earth or ammonium salts. The process is particularly useful in the reclamation of used triaryl phosphate esters, particularly tert-butylphenyl phenyl phosphates, containing the aforementioned soluble metallic salts.

Abstract: An improved method and composition for controlling foam in non-aqueous fluid systems having a tendency to foam. The improved method consists of adding to the system a foam control composition containing an organo-silicone antifoam agent and an alkanolamide. A method is also provided for inhibiting foam formation in such non-aqueous fluid systems by adding to the system an alkanolamide.
