  • Publication number: 20160355198
Abstract: A vehicle control system includes a controller that communicates between a first vehicle and a second vehicle and/or a monitoring device in a vehicle system. The controller determines a communication loss and, responsive to determining the communication loss, switches to communicating via a different communication path. The controller also determines an operational restriction on movement of the vehicle system based on the communication loss that is determined, obtains a transitional plan that designates operational settings of the vehicle system at one or more different locations along a route being traveled by the vehicle system, different distances along the route being traveled by the vehicle system, and/or different times. The controller automatically changes the movement of the vehicle system according to the operational settings designated by the transitional plan to reduce the movement of the vehicle system to or below the operational restriction.

  • Patent number: 9481385
Abstract: A method for predicting failure of a crossing warning system is disclosed. The method includes monitoring an electrical characteristic of a first route when an electric current is injected into the first route. The first route has a crossing intersection with a second route and a crossing signal at the crossing intersection. The electrical characteristic is monitored to detect when a vehicle is approaching the crossing intersection on the first route and to determine when to activate the crossing signal at the crossing intersection. The method also includes identifying one or more changes in the electrical characteristic of the first route, and, based on the one or more changes that are identified, predicting a failure mode of the first route that interferes with detection of the vehicle approaching the crossing intersection.

  • Patent number: 9308902
Abstract: A system (for controlling a vehicle system along a route) includes a route geometry sensor, a speed sensor, and a controller. The route geometry sensor monitors a route curve profile for a segment of the route. The speed sensor monitors a speed of the vehicle system. The controller identifies a characteristic frequency associated with the vehicle system. The controller determines a periodic driving force exerted on the vehicle system from the route based on the route curve profile and the speed of the vehicle system. The controller analyzes the periodic driving force with the characteristic frequency to determine an excitation rate. Responsive to the excitation rate exceeding a designated threshold, the controller designates tractive efforts or braking efforts for implementation by the vehicle system to change the speed of the vehicle system such that the excitation rate falls below the threshold.
