Patent number: 9169085Abstract: A transfer assembly includes a transfer starwheel having recesses to receive an article. Each recess includes a vacuum port and at least one insert formed from a compliant material. The at least one insert at least partially defines a shape of the recess, which corresponds to an aspect of the article. The transfer assembly includes a mounting hub including a plurality of circumferential sets of vacuum openings extending axially along the mounting hub and coupled to a vacuum source. A vacuum is delivered to the vacuum openings. The transfer starwheel is mounted on a mounting hub to align the vacuum ports of the transfer starwheel with a selected set of vacuum openings on the mounting hub. The mounting hub rotates so that the transfer starwheel receives the article into one of the recesses at a first position and rotates to a second position while holding the article with the vacuum.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2012Date of Patent: October 27, 2015Assignee: Belvac Production Machinery, Inc.Inventors: Joseph G. Schill, Harold J. Marshall

Patent number: 7938049Abstract: An apparatus has a rotatable base having a plurality of guide features with opposed sides and supports. Each of the supports are slidably disposed in one of the plurality of guide features. The supports and the base member have spacer engagement surfaces which are configured to face one another in pairs and to have spacers clamped between each of the pairs. The spacers are so dimensioned as to locate each of the supports in a predetermined position with respect to an axis of rotation of the rotatable base member. A gear train on cut drive side is driven by a variable speed motor. Motor speed can be set for a given can diameter.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2006Date of Patent: May 10, 2011Assignee: Belvac Production Machinery, Inc.Inventors: William Reynolds, Joseph G. Schill

Patent number: 7918328Abstract: A machine arrangement that operates on a plurality of articles, such as bottles, includes a plurality of machines arranged in a machine arrangement. At least one of the machines includes an apparatus configured to modify the articles by at least one of moving, holding, manipulating and shaping the articles as they pass from an article infeed to an article discharge of the machine arrangement. A recirculation mechanism moves articles from a downstream machine after a first pass (or run) and recirculates the articles back to an upstream machine in a second (recirculation) pass (or run) so that the articles, which are recirculated through the second pass are again subjected to a different machine modifying operation in at least one machine that the articles have previously passed in the first pass. The articles move continuously through the first and second passes while being subjected to at least one machine modifying operation.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 2010Date of Patent: April 5, 2011Assignee: Belvac Production Machinery, Inc.Inventors: Joseph G. Schill, Harold James Marshall
