  • Publication number: 20240096185
Abstract: An optical fiber is monitored for an intrusion event where reflected optical signals are divided into streams each associated with a respective location on the optical fiber. Blocks of the streams are selected each containing a plurality of streams and the streams are collated, for example by averaging, to create a single stream to which an algorithm is applied to create coefficients which are compared with a threshold value to generate an output indicative of disturbance of the fiber by an intrusion event. Each block representative of a length of the fiber is thus treated as a zone and the detection algorithm is applied to each. This creates a DAS system that does not require unique tuning as each zone is independently monitored.

  • Patent number: 11502749
Abstract: In an optical fiber monitoring system which detects physical disturbance or other parameters such as temperature or strain of a fiber where a monitor signal is transmitted along the optical fiber and analyzed to detect changes which are indicative of an event, a method is provided for periodically checking proper operation of the optical fiber monitoring system. A fiber disturbance actuator periodically causes a pattern of disturbances of a portion of the fiber at a predetermined location thereon where the disturbance is characteristic of the event to be monitored. The monitor signal is analyzed to detect the pattern of changes and in the event that expected changes are not detected, a warning is issued that the intrusion detection system is not properly operating.

  • Patent number: 11401680
Abstract: A system for detecting an intrusion of at least one of a monitoring fiber and a detector comprises a sensor having a closure monitor and an intrusion monitor, the closure monitor including a signal generator and at least one detector attached to the monitoring fiber. The signal generator transmits signal light such that the monitoring fiber receives the transmitted signal light and reflects a portion of the signal light via the at least one detector to the closure monitor and transmits a non-reflected portion of the signal light. The intrusion monitor receives the transmitted non-reflected portion of the signal light, and monitors the non-reflected portion of the signal light to detect transient changes in the non-reflected portion of the signal light indicative of at least one of a vibration, a motion and a handling of at least one of the monitoring fiber and the at least one detector.

  • Patent number: 11190271
Abstract: In a monitoring system using optical fibers, an area to be monitored is divided into zones where each zone has fibers which create a change in a signal transmitted by the fiber in response to an event to be monitored. The fibers all communicate to a common monitoring system having a channel for each zone. The fiber of a second one of the zones communicates to the respective channel of the common monitoring system through a fiber passing through a first one of the zones so that the fiber and thus the second channel is also responsive to an event in the first zone zones. The invention provides a method of distinguishing between the separate zones where events have occurred by a Boolean analysis of the signals in the different channels.

  • Patent number: 10600294
Abstract: A method is provided for detecting intrusion into an optical cable of a single mode optical fiber network comprising where monitoring light signals are transmitted along a telecommunications optical fiber to be monitored either along a fiber additional to a data fiber or by multiplexing onto a common fiber. The received monitoring light signals after transmission along the telecommunications optical fiber are analyzed for changes indicative of movement of the optical fiber for detecting an intrusion event. The monitoring light signals at the receive end of the fiber signals are monitored by feeding the signals from the single mode fiber into a multi-mode fiber in a manner which causes changes in modal power distribution which can be detected by taking a portion only of the modes.

  • Patent number: 9374157
Abstract: A method is provided for detecting movement indicative of intrusion events on optical drop fibers of a network where the individual drop fiber can be identified to locate the event. The method uses a monitor system at the network end and multiplexing the monitor signal along the individual fibers to the respective terminals. At each of the terminals, the monitor signal is returned unchanged or in modified form along the same or different fibers to the network end. At the network end the received monitor signals is analyzed for changes in said monitor signals indicative of movement. Which one or more of the drop fibers has triggered the alarm is determined by modifying the monitor signal in wavelength or polarization, or by applying a modulation at the source and/or at multiplexing and/or at returning so that the monitor signal of one drop fiber has a difference from the monitor signal of another drop fiber.

  • Patent number: 9046669
Abstract: A fiber optic network has alarmed fiber optic lines in the cables connecting a secured junction box to plural user lock boxes. An outgoing alarm line and return alarm line in each cable connect the junction box to each user box. The outgoing alarm line is looped to the return alarm line inside the user lock box. The return alarm line is looped to the outgoing alarm line of a different cable inside the junction box to interconnect a plurality of alarm lines passing through a plurality of user boxes. A detector detects an alarm signal in the connected alarm lines to trigger an intrusion alarm. Power to the components in the box is disconnected when the box is opened and ventilation openings to the box are closed when the box is closed.
