  • Patent number: 4508131
Abstract: Safety valving for cargo tanks used for bulk transportation of hazardous commodities, such as for instance flammables. The valving provides automatic differential pressure relief for the tank, and overturn protection, with the automatic differential pressure relief including port means in the housing for the valving, adapted for communicating the interior of the associated tank with the exterior atmosphere, and comprising poppet type closure means coacting with the port means and biased to normally closed condition, but being openable to provide automatic differential pressure relief. The overturn protection section comprises an angle responsive closure means responsive to predetermined angular orientation of the valving relative to the vertical, and operative to close the associated port means of the valving against inadvertent escape of the tank's contents, when the tank is at least in partially overturned position.

  • Patent number: 4457486
Abstract: A discharge control for a storage tank for liquid, such as a gasoline transport tank, with the tank having an outlet port with the control comprising an emergency valve associated with the port, with such emergency valve normally being biased to a closed position, whereby discharge from the tank is prevented. Enclosed or protected valve operating means coacts with the emergency valve and is responsive to air pressure, for overcoming the normal valve closing bias of the emergency valve, wth the valve operating means including a crank comprising an operating lever with a crank case in which the lever is disposed, and with an air operated reciprocal motor unit secured to the crank case for coaction with the lever of the crank upon application of pressurized air to the motor unit, to cause the crank to move the emergency valve to open position. The valve operating means is able to be operated manually in the event of failure of the pressurized air supply.

  • Patent number: 4453698
Abstract: A stuffing box for use in a control for an emergency valve for controlling discharge from a liquid storage tank, such as a gasoline storage tank, with the tank having an outlet port with a conduit member coacting with the port in depending relation therefrom. The stuffing box is adapted to be mounted on the conduit member and to extend from the interior to the exterior thereof. The stuffing box comprises a barrel member defining a passageway open at opposite ends. A crank including a shaft rotatably disposed in the passageway of the barrel member is mounted on the barrel member. Sealing means coacts between the shaft and the barrel member for sealing the shaft against leakage of liquid from the conduit lengthwise of the barrel member, and a releasable non-threaded detent is disposed generally adjacent the exterior end of the barrel member for locating and maintaining the shaft relative to the barrel member lengthwise thereof.

  • Patent number: 4445533
Abstract: An air fluid check valve for assembly into the interior of a pair of generally axially aligned conduit sections at a separable joint thereof, for use for instance on a bulk hauling transport trailer adapted for handling powdered solids, such as for instance flour, or cement, or like product. The air valve comprises a valve body which is adapted to be readily inserted into and removed from the separable conduit joint, and in one embodiment has a radially extending rim at one end thereof for locating the valve in the interior of the conduit sections at the joint thereof. In another embodiment, bolts connecting flanged portions of the conduit joint, coact in juxtaposed condition with the valve body to locate the valve in proper position at the conduit joint.

  • Patent number: 4406299
Abstract: A liquid level valve for use in filling a liquid storage tank to control (in response to increased air pressure within the liquid level valve) the tank emergency loading valve which is held open by pressurized air.The liquid level valve has an air control cavity connected to the pressurized air and an actuating cavity which exhausts to the atmosphere and is disposed above the air control cavity and connected to it via an actuating passageway. An air control diaphragm divides the air control cavity into upper and lower portions and controls the flow of pressurized air into such lower portion which exhausts to the atmosphere. The air control diaphragm has a small air control passageway (of smaller diameter than the actuating passageway) allowing pressurized air into the air control cavity upper portion, thus permitting the pressurized air to act on both sides of the air control diaphragm.

  • Patent number: 4126294
Abstract: A fabricated adapter valve for mounting on the exterior of a transportation tank for liquid, such as for instance gasoline or oil, providing for coupling with a compatible loading coupler of a loading island, for loading the liquid into the transportation tank. The valve arrangement provides an adapter coupler section having an exterior coupling configuration as defined by the American Petroleum Institute, for universal coupling with loading couplers of a loading station, and a valve which is of smaller size and less weight, having fewer places to leak and possessing fewer parts, and therefore more economical to manufacture, as compared to prior art valve arrangements.

Abstract: A fabricated adapter valve for mounting on the exterior of a transportation tank for liquid, such as for instance gasoline or oil, providing for coupling with a compatible loading coupler of a loading island, for loading the liquid into the transportation tank. The adapter valve possesses a configuration defined by The American Petroleum Institute for universal coupling with loading couplers of a loading station, and includes a manually operable actuator for opening the poppet of the adapter valve, together with a sinuous-like cam configuration on the actuator for holding the poppet in predetermined open positions.

  • Patent number: 4013096
Abstract: A fabricated valve for use in loading a transportation storage tank with liquid, such as for instance gasoline or oil, and providing for coupling of the valve with a compatible loading coupler of a loading station used in loading the liquid into the transportation tank. The valve includes an outlet assembly portion for unloading liquid from the transportation tank. The valve is of relatively light weight, is economical to manufacture, and possesses large flow areas which cuts friction losses and turbulence of the liquid during loading and unloading operations.

  • Patent number: 4011885
Abstract: A manifold and valve structure for use with a multi-compartmented transportation tank for liquids, such as for instance a mobile gasoline or oil transportation tank. The manifold and valve structure represents a compact, comparatively lightweight arrangement which includes a plurality of adapter couplings for selective coupling of the structure to a source of the liquid or liquids to be transported in the tank compartments, with a valve coacting with each adapter coupling for controlling the flow of liquid from the multi-compartmented tank vehicle during an unloading operation, and making it possible for selective control of simultaneous discharge of liquid from a plurality of the tank compartments utilizing one discharge hose.

  • Patent number: 4009862
Abstract: A remotely controlled fluid pressure actuated internal emergency valve for the outlet opening of a liquid storage tank, for automatically closing the outlet port in the valve in the event of various emergency situations, and which also is adapted for bottom liquid loading or filling of the tank. The valve embodies means hydraulically balancing the movable housing of the valve, whereby the associated biasing means for the valve is effective to move the valve housing to closed position during bottom loading of the tank upon predetermined exhaustion of actuating fluid from the actuating pressure chamber of the valve. The valve is relatively simple in construction and highly effective in operation.
