Patent number: 7261053Abstract: An in ovo jet injection apparatus and related methods for treating live eggs. The jet injection apparatus includes one or more jet injection delivery devices configured to deliver one or more treatment substances to predetermined areas of eggs using a high pressure stream of the treatment substance(s). Multiple treatment substances can be delivered so that they are spatially and/or temporally separate. The devices and methods of the invention enable the effective use of a plurality of treatment substances, including those that are effective when used alone but can be noxious if mixed. The methods and apparatus for the jet injection of substances into embryonic chicks reduce the risk of mechanical injury to the developing birds that would be caused by injection needles. The methods and apparatus of the invention can also reduce the introduction of an infection into the chicks.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2005Date of Patent: August 28, 2007Assignee: Merial LimitedInventors: Kemal Karaca, David J. Hayzer, Joseph H. Johnston, Jr.

Patent number: 7044049Abstract: The present invention relates generally to a frying apparatus and, in particular, to a frying apparatus comprising a cooking container for containing oil or the like for cooking a turkey, a chicken, or seafood; a shield for shielding the operator from oil splatters and preventing the over-spill of the oil from the cooking container; a supporting stand for holding the cooking container; and a plurality of securing straps for securing the cooking container to the supporting stand such that the cooking container is stably positioned onto the supporting stand of the frying apparatus. One embodiment of the present invention contemplates a cooking container generally configured to removably receive the shield such that the shield, when inserted into the open end of the cooking container securely adjoins and abuts the cooking container so that oil does not spill-over between the shield and the cooking container.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2003Date of Patent: May 16, 2006Inventors: Joseph H. Johnston, Sr., Joseph H. Johnston, Jr.

Patent number: 6910446Abstract: A spray delivery system and methods of use thereof, suitable for delivering a fan-shaped vaccine spray to birds or chicks held within an open-topped container, comprising a cover, an elongated guide rail mounted thereon, and a spray head may move reversibly on the guide rail. The spray head comprises a spray nozzle assembly having a spray port and optionally a fan-shaped nozzle for delivering a fan-shaped fluid spray. The cover has an elongated slot that permits the spray nozzle assembly to extend below the plane of the cover while allowing the spray nozzle assembly to freely traverse the length of an open-topped container placed beneath the cover. By reversibly moving the spray head along the guide rail, the spray delivery system can deliver a substantially uniform fluid spray to an open-topped container with minimal overspray and reduced fluid wastage.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2003Date of Patent: June 28, 2005Assignee: Merial LimitedInventor: Joseph H. Johnston Jr.

Patent number: 6789467Abstract: The present invention provides systems for the injection delivery of at least two fluid doses to a small bird by penetrating the skin of the recipient bird with at least two injection needles. It is then possible to simultaneously inject drugs, or other fluid vaccines that do not mix well or whose mixture would be detrimental to the stability or efficacy of the active ingredients therein. The present invention provides a novel injection needle support for connecting the injection needles to dose distributors and fluid supply containers while maintaining the injection ends of the injection needles in a substantially parallel arrangement. The injection needle support typically is attached to a carrier connected to an actuator, an actuator power source and a switch mechanism wherein the actuator, when activated, can reciprocally move the carrier and injection support toward and away from an injection position.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2002Date of Patent: September 14, 2004Assignee: Merial LimitedInventors: Joseph H. Johnston, Jr., Roger Luke, Robert Pruitt, Eric Lust, David C. McHenry, Charles O. Phillipi

Patent number: 5884583Abstract: A method for orally administering medicaments to a plurality of animal drinking stations, and an apparatus for accomplishing the method. A medicament reservoir is separately connected to each of the drinking stations via tubes each of an identical predetermined diameter. Medicament is allowed to flow through each of the tubes to each drinking station. Substantially identical rate of medicament flow to each drinking station is insured by the identical predetermined diameter of each of the tubes.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1997Date of Patent: March 23, 1999Assignee: Rhone Merieux, Inc.Inventors: Joseph H.
